Ap. 1861, in Co. C, First Scott Life Guards; took part in the battle of Big Bethel, 10 June 1861; and was discharged at Fortress Monroe, Va., for sickness, 3 July 1861. After his recovery, he enlisted in Co. C, 82nd Reg. of N.Y.S. Volunteers, 15 Jan. 1862; and served till 28 Jan. 1863, when he was again discharged for disability arising from wounds in both legs, received in the battle of Antietam, 17 Sept. 1862. He enlisted, the third time, 5 Nov. 1863, in Co. H, 57th Reg. of N.Y.S. Volunteers; and went to Hilton Head, S.C., where he served as hospital-steward till he received his third honorable discharge, 8 June 1865.

I. Francis Theodore Ryan, b. at Talbotton, Ga., 18 July 1838; a machinist; married in Hernando Street, Memphis, Tenn., 8 May 1872, by Rev. Mr. Stubbs, Methodist, to Elizabeth Caroline Fisher, born at Sardis, Miss., 8 Sept. 1849, dau. of Frederick and Elizabeth Caroline (Horton) Fisher. They settled at Atlanta, Ga., where he has been clerk of the city-market fo three years, tax-receiver and collector for one year, and was, in May 1874, serving his second term as city-clerk. He moved with his mother and step-father, in Feb. 1859, to Des Arc, Ark., where he enlisted in the Des Arc Guards, which company was afterward attached to Col. Pat. Cleburne's Regiment of Arkansas State Infantry, with which he served till July 1861, when ill health compelled him to leave the army. In Nov. 1861, he joined a company of the 1st Reg. of Ark. Mounted Rifles; and was captured at Pea Ridge, Ark., 7 or 8 March 1862, by the Union forces. Having escaped from captivity, he took part in battles at Farmington, Miss.; Richmond, Ky., 31 Aug. 1862; Murfreesboro', Tenn., 31 Dec. 1862 and 2 Jan. 1863; Jackson, Miss., July 1863, and Chickamauga, Ten.., 19 and 20 Sept. 1863. At the latter place, on the second day of the battle, he was wounded in the left leg, by a gun-shot, which made amputation above the knee necessary. He was living at 143 Jones Street, Atlanta, in Ap. 1875.
