Epis., to John Gerard Heckscher, born at 517 Broadway, New York, 30 July 1837, son of Charles Augustus and Georgiana Louisa (Coster) Heckscher, and g. son of John Gerard and Catharine Margaret (Holsmann) Coster.1 He was 1st lieut., 12th Reg., U.S. Infantry, under the command of Gen. McClennan, for two years during the war of 1861. They resided at 143 Madison Ave., New York, in Sept. 1877, spending the Summer months in their cottage at Newport, R. I.

IV. Stephen Whitney, b. in Whitney Ave., New Haven, Conn., 20 Oct. 1841; was 1st lieut., 4th U. S. Artillery, from 5 Aug. 1861 to 12 Nov. 1863; married in New York City, 27 Ap. 1864, Margaret Lawrence Johnson,2 born in New York 1 June 1841, dau. of Bradish and Louisa Anna (Lawrance) Johnson, the latter living at 147 Fifth Ave., New York, at the time of her marriage. He resided on the homestead, Whitney Ave., New Haven, in 1877, spending the Winter months on Woodlawn plantation, Parish of Plaquemine, La.

V. Hannah Eugenia Lawrence Whitney, b. in Whitney Ave., New Haven, Conn., 10 March 1844; died there 15 Sept. 1845, and was buried in the New Haven Cemetery.

Maria Whitney, b. in Whitney Ave., New Haven, Conn., 26 May 1851; married in Trinity Chapel, New York, 28 Ap. 1870, Robert Cambridge Livingston,3 born at New York 9 May 1847, son of Robert Cambridge and Maria Bronson (Murray) Livingston. They resided at 109 East 34th St., New York, in Sept. 1877.

Caroline Suydam Whitney, b. in Whitney Ave., New Haven, Conn., 17 Nov. 1852; married at New York, 18 Oct. 1871, John Noble Alsop Griswold, born at New York 11 Feb. 1849, son of George and Lydia (Alley) Griswold, of 9 Washington Square, New York, g. son of George and Maria Matilda (Cummings) Griswold, and g. g. son of George and Elizabeth (Lee) Griswold.4 He died at Hamburg, Germany, 8 Dec. 1871.

4 MATTHEW GRISWOLD was born at Kenilworth, Eng., in 1618; settled in Saybrook, Conn.; married Ann Wolcott, born 1620, dau. of Henry Wolcott (an original settler of Windsor, Conn.) and his wife, Elizabeth Saunders. He was representative of Saybrook often, and of Lyme after the division of the town. He died 9 Jan.1699. His son,
MATTHEW GRISWOLD, of Lyme, Conn., married, 21 May 1683, Phebe Hyde, born Jan. 1662, dau. of Samuel and Jane (Lee) Hyde, of Saybrook and Norwich, Conn., and g. dau. of William Hyde, an original proprietor of Hartford, Conn. His son,
GEORGE GRISWOLD, born 13 Aug. 1692, married (1) Hannah Lyndes. His son,
