Hopkinton was formed in 1715. In 1735, it gave land to Upton. Land was ceded to Holliston in 1781, and to Upton in 1808. Its boundaries with Holliston and Milford were adjusted in 1835. The Unionville sections was split off as Ashland in 1846. Some of that land was regained from Ashland in 1853.
