Gene and Bessie Whitney, 1907

Eugene Lamont9 'Gene' Whitney (Melvin8, Erastus7, Ezra6, Ezra5, John4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), son of Melvin8 and Ann Eliza (Hooker) Whitney, was born 12 Sep 1854, NY, probably Canaseraga, Allegany Co, NY, and died 1 May 1911, Berkley, CA.

He married, about 1879, probably in Bulls City (now Alton), Osborne County, KS, Bessie P. -----. She was born Feb 1862, IA, and died after 1930, probably Boise, Ada County, ID.

He was a farmer and later a real estate developer. In 1888 they resided in Washington, Washington County, Kansas, but by 1907 they had moved to Idaho. They were living in Boise in 1910 where he was a dealer in real estate. When he died in 1911, he was listed as a resident of Boise. The 1910 census indicates that Eugene and Bessie had a total of 8 children, only 3 of whom survived.

i. Bertrice L. Whitney, b. Dec 1880, KS; m. Bartlett Sinclair and had three daughters. As Idaho State Auditor, Bartlett Sinclair was sent by Governor Frank Steunenberg to the Couer d'Alene mines as his representative during the Idaho Mine Labor troubles of 1899-1900.
ii. Stella B. Whitney, b. Mar 1884, KS; m. Harry Shellworth and had one child, Eugene Whitney Shellworth. Descendants live in Idaho and Colorado.
iii. Helen P. Whitney, b. May 1887 in Washington, Washington Co., KS; m. 1920, McKeen Fitch Morrow. No known descendants.
