Earliest ancestor was Turstin de Flandres, one of William the Conqueror's knights, who changed his name to Turstin de Wigamore when he was given a grant including Wigmore Castle. His son inherited Pencombe from Turstin's wife, Agnes. The next hundred years are murky, but one Eustace de Pencombe changed his name to de Whitney in about 1190, presumably because Whitney was the most important place in his lands.

My paternal grandmother was Ethel Whitney of Gorham, Maine, and she was descended from the youngest brother of Eli Whitney whose name may have been Thaddeus. She married Albert Y. Tucker, my father's father, so I am named Tucker.
