Alma Whitney was born in the US in about 1841. Her family moved to Ontario, Canada sometime after 1845, and before 1848. She married a Cribb, and her daughter, Lydia, married Mark Crawforth. These were my grandmother's parents. The family story has always been that we were related to Eli Whitney, but I don't know if this is true.

I know that Alma's father was named Ira Whitney, and he was born around 1810 in the US. Her mother is listed as "Sidia" on the 1851 Canadian census, but I suspect her actual name is Lidia. She was born around 1812 in the US, but I don't know her maiden name. I do not know which state the family lived in. I do know that Alma's siblings were Semore or Lemore, born 1835, Hariet born 1839, Ira, born 1843, Charlotte, born 1845, all in the US, and Daniel, born in Ontario in 1848. This is all I know about the family. I have just begun picking up this thread. I would like to find out as much as I can about Ira Whitney, Alma's father. (I would also love to know if "Sidia" is really a Lidia, and her maiden name, but I don't expect to find that information.)

Ira Whitney was a Baptist, and, at least in Ontario in the early years, a labourer.
