I am a family historian working on the Coombs families in New England. However, given my first name, I also have a strong interest in linking to a Whitney line.
My great grandfather, Jacob Wesley Coombs, married Harriet Frances Whitney on 18 Dec 1852 in Maine. His brother, Luther Augustine Coombs, married Harriet's sister, Mary Caroline Whitney.
Harriet Frances Whitney was born 25 Jul 1831 and died in Oct 1893 in Ellsworth, ME.
Mary Caroline Whitney was born about 1832 and died 24 Feb 1915, probably in New York, NY.
These two girls had two brothers Charles H. Whitney (b. ~1828, d. 16 Sep 1885, resided for many years in Vancouver, WA) and John Whitney, who died in youth. There was a third sister Rosa A. Whitney.
The parents of these five Whitneys were: Nathaniel Whitney (b. 7 Feb 1800 and died 1838; buried in Portland, ME) who married Charlotte Cook (b. 16 Feb 1802 and d. in 1850) on 5 May 1827 in the area of Scarborough, ME. Tradition says Nathaniel was the son of another Nathaniel, but I have nothing to substantiate this.
Nathaniel shows up as a resident of Portland, ME in the 1830 Federal Census and his widow, Charlotte, is there in the 1840 census, though the composition of the family changes significantly. There is, however, a Nathaniel Whitney of Cumberland County, ME, who is tracked through the census records beginning in 1790 in Gorham & Scarborough and 1800-1840 in Standish.
Can anyone help me make a connection to a known Whitney line?
