Willard Whitney
Len,
I have just looked at the 1870 census for your great-grandfather, Willard Whitney. I found the following:
National Archives Microfilm Series: M593, Roll: 242, Page: 685. U.S. Census of 1870, Illinois, Lake County, Town of Warren, Post Office Wenthworth, taken 5 Jul 1870.
27 28 Whitney, Williard 39 M W Farmer $0 $0 N.Y. Male citizen of U.S.
" Elizabeth 36 F W Keeps House " "
" William D. 13 M W Ills. Attended school
" Almer 4 M W " " "
This seems certain to be the right family, despite the creative spelling: your great-grandfather Willard with son your grandfather Elmer. This supplies the given name, age, and birth state of your great-grandmother Elizabeth.
Then I went to the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, at Archive:Illinois, Marriage Records, Part 2. There I found this:
WHITNEY, WILLARD DRUSE, ELIZABETH A LAKE 12/28/1852 B/ 65 92M2307
This supplies her maiden name, and the date and place of their marriage.
Then I used the L.D.S. web site www.familysearch.org, and found their record at <http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/PRF/individual_record.asp?recid=1140927471>. This supplies the date and place of her birth, and the names of her parents.
In the 1860 Census I found the following, which may be your family, but it is not certain:
National Archives Microfilm Series: M653, Roll: 193, Page: 822. U.S. Census of 1860, Illinois, Lake County, Town of Avon, Post Office Hainesville, taken 17 Jul 1860.
3168 3138 Whitney, W. 30 M W Farmer $0 $150 Mich.
" A. 28 F W N.Y.
" Willie 4 M W Ill.
I leave any further investigation to you.
