Welcome!

Welcome to the Whitney Research Group (WRG). Thanks for posting your lineage back to Mattie Whitney. I have done some research on her, and have found her parents and paternal grandparents. I have entered them on your lineage page. This comes from census records and some undocumented family trees found at Ancestry.com, so could use a little more supporting proof, but is highly probably correct.

Aaron Whitney is a bit of a mystery. The first sure record of him we have found (so far!) is in the 1850 census in Waterville, Kennebec Co., ME. His wife is sometimes called Keziah, but that is wrong. Her name was probably more conventionally spelled Desire, being named after her paternal grandmother, Desire (Tupper) Dillingham. Much is known of Deziah's ancestry, including a line to William Brewster of the "Mayflower", but nothing about Aaron.

I hope this helps.

Mattie's Siblings

Dear Miniquilts,

I found the following about her siblings, from the book Abbott, Lemuel Abijah, Descendants of George Abbott, of Rowley, Mass.: of his joint descendants with George Abbott, sr., of Andover, Mass., of the descendants of Daniel Abbott, of Providence, R.I., of some of the descendants of Capt. Thomas Abbott, of Andover, Mass., of George Abbott, of Norwalk Ct., of Robert Abbott, of Branford Ct., with brief notes of many others of the name, original settlers in the United States (Boston: Abbott, 1906), 1246 pgs.

In volume 1, on pp. 416-417, it shows:

655 Hannah7 Abbott, b. Apr. 14, 1781; d. -----; m. Aaron Whitney, of Watertown, Mass., a desc. of John and Eleanor Whitney, who embarked from Ipswich, Engl, Apr., 1635, and settled in Watertown, where he was selectman and town clerk. Aaron d. in Watertown. [Footnote: Bond's Gens. of Watertown, 1855, p. 642.] She m.(2d), prob. in Fairfield, Me., Mr. Littlefield; had 1 child (8th gen.), b. in Watertown, Mass.:

  7. Richard10 Whitney, b. in Canaan, Me., Feb. 11, 1883.
  8. Mida Bell10 Whitney, b. in Fairfield, Dec. 13, 1884.

  12. Grace May10 Whitney, b. in Canaan, Dec. 19, 1893.
b. Dau.9, b. -----; d. in Fairfield, 1852(?).

The book traces the ancestry of Hannah7 Abbott back to the immigrant: Joseph6 and Ruth (Buckman) Abbott, Joseph5 and Hannah (White) Abbott, Nehemiah4 and Sarah (Foster) Abbott, Nehemiah3 and Abigail (Lovejoy) Abbott, George2 and Sarah (Farnum) Abbott, George1 and ----- (-----) Abbott of Rowley.

If the book is right about Aaron's parentage, then we can trace his Whitney ancestry starting at this page: Family:Whitney, Aaron (1780-a1810).

I note that the above book is wrong about what is said in Bond's book. There it just gives the birth of Aaron in 1780 and his ancestry, but nothing about a marriage or death.
