Amos8 Whitney (Aaron7, Aaron6, Levi5, Daniel4, Jonathan3, Jonathan2, John1), born Biddeford, Maine, 8 Oct 1832; married 8 Sep 1856, Laura Johnson, born 9 Nov 1837.

He was born in Biddeford, Maine. Some of his younger years were spent in Saccarappa, where he was educated in the common schools. At the age of twelve years he moved to Exeter, New Hampshire, where he remained until he was fourteen. He then entered the employ of the Essex Machine Company, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and learned the machinist's trade. He went to Hartford when he was about nineteen years of age and was employed by the Colts Fire Arms Company for a few years, and for a number of years he was iIn the employ of the Phoenix Iron Works. In 1860, with [Photo] Francis A. Pratt, he founded in a small way what is now Pratt & Whitney County, manufacturers of machinist's tools, special machinery, etc., now one of the largest concerns of kind in this country. It is well known in this country and abroad. He is a stanch Republican in politics, but being of a very retiring disposition never takes an active part in public affairs; resided 231 Lawrence St. Hartford, Connecticut.
