James Whitney (Thomas), son of Whitney, Thomas, was born 23 Jul 1774 Somerset Co., MD, and died 13 Nov 1852, Point Harmon, OH.

He married firstly, 14 Nov 1807, Washington Co., OH, Ruth Greene, daughter of John and Mary (Greene) Greene. She was born 4 Apr 1782, Warwick, RI, and died 17 Jun 1832, Point Harmon, OH.

He married secondly, 10 Dec 1833, Washington Co., OH, Rebecca Bowen. She was born about 1789, CT, and died after 1860.

He resided Washington Co., OH.[1]

Children of James and Ruth (Greene) Whitney (probably incomplete):

i. Daniel Greene Whitney, b. 6 Oct 1808, Washington Co., OH; d. Sacramento, CA; m. 15 Aug 1838, New Haven, CT, Mary Ann Cutler.[2] Child: William Munson Whitney, b. 8 Jul 1843, New Haven, CT, d. 1 Sep 1884, Sacramento, CA. He resided in Quincy, IL, and was a dealer in dry-goods. Afterward he removed to California; was an officer in the California Steamboat Co.
