Family:Whitney, George (1778-1849)

Capt. George⁵ Whitney (Jason⁴, Mark³, Benjamin², John¹), son of Jason⁴ and Lois (Fisher) Whitney, was born 22 Mar 1778, Natick, MA,^[1] and died 18 Feb 1849, Natick, MA, aged 71 years; married; of lung fever.^[2]

Marriage intentions were published 3 Sep 1799, Natick, MA, for him and first wife Esther Morse.^[3] She was born 1 Sep 1780, Framingham, MA, and died 26 Mar 1836, Natick, MA.^[4] Because George and Esther named two sons "David Morse Whitney", she was probably the daughter of the David Morse who was enumerated in 1810, Natick, Middlesex Co., MA.

In 1810, George and his family were not enumerated in their own household as far as can be found. They were not included with George's parents as there was no daughter under 10 in that household. There were people of the appropriate ages listed in the household of David Morse in Natick, and this was probably where they were residing at the time.

Marriage intentions were published 24 Mar 1839, Natick, MA, for him "Capt." and second wife Azubah (Elder) Hastings "of Millbury".^[5] He "of Natick" married secondly, 13 Apr 1839, Millbury, MA, "Mrs." Azubah (Elder) Hastings,^[6] daughter of William and Sally (Campbell) Elder. She was born 5 Sep 1786, Worcester, MA, and died 4 May 1861, Natick, MA, aged 74 years 6 months 29 days, of paralysis and old age.^[7] She had married firstly, before 1810, Joseph Hastings, by whom she had Liberty, Azubah, Henry (all born in Millbury, MA), and Adeline. He had died 3 Jul 1832, Millbury, MA, aged 48 years.

Pierce says the following:^[8]

He was born in Natick, Mass., where he always resided; was a leading and public spirited citizen; was captain of the local militia company; member of the parish committee, and held all the town offices. All his children were noted for their musical ability and penmanship.
