Merrick T.9 Whitney (Torrey8, Moses7, Samuel6, Samuel5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1), son of Torrey8 and Betsey (Lamb) Whitney, was born 20 Nov 1818, Jackson, PA, and died 24 Mar 1887, Thompson, PA.

He married, 26 Nov 1842, Fostina L. Wheaton. She was born 25 Aug 1818, PA, and died after 1880.

Merrick T. Whitney was born in Jackson, PA, and settled on the farm in 1842 where he ever after lived in Thompson. In 1862 he enlisted forty-six of his neighbors and friends and with them entered Company B, 17th Regiment Pennsylvania Calvary; at its organization he was chosen first lieutenant, but failing health compelled him to resign his commission in Jan 1863. That he was held in high regard by his townsmen is shown by his holding all but one of the offices in Thompson. In 1878 he was elected county commissioner on the Republican ticket and re-elected in 1881. He resided Thompson, PA.
