Revision as of 14:56, 6 December 2015

Josiah M. Whitney, parentage unknown (but see Notes below), was born say 1815, Medway, MA, and died after 1845.

Marriage intentions were published 18 Aug 1838, Malden, MA, for him "of Malden" and Abigail B. Ford "of Chelsea".[1] Marriage intentions were published 19 Aug 1838, Chelsea, MA, for him "of Malden" and Abigail B. Ford.[2] He married Abigail B. Ford. She was born about 1818, Epping, NH, and died 17 Sep 1876, Boston, MA, aged 58 years, of encephaloid and exhaustion.[3]

He was a wheelwright.

Children of Josiah M. and Abigail B. (Ford) Whitney:

i. (daughter) Whitney, b. about 1839; known from 1840 census.
ii. Newell Augustus Whitney, b. 9 Feb 1845, Lowell, MA;[4] "Augustus D." d. 2 Mar 1866, Lowell, MA, aged 21 years, of consumption.[5]

Child of ----- and Abigail B. (Ford) Whitney:

iii. Frederick H. Whitney, b. May 1859, Lowell, MA; m. Edith M. Parkin.

Notes

He could possibly be the same as Josiah8 Whitney, son of Thomas7 and Abigail (Hapgood) Whitney, born 11 Jun 1809, Marlborough, MA, of whom nothing further has been found. The death record of son Augustus gives his birth town as Medway, MA, but no record of his birth is found in that town.

There is no record of Josiah after the birth of his son in 1845. He cannot be found in 1850, and from 1855 on, his wife is living alone. At death she is called widow of George, which is an error for Josiah.

Frederick's death record gives his mother's maiden name correctly, but omits his father's name. His paternity is unknown. If Josiah had died before 1855, then he may have been adopted or illegitimate.
