5.{{note|5}} Her death record gives her father as Gamaliel Collins of Hardwick, and wife Ann of Truro.  That man had two marriages recorded in Hardwick, but his second wife, Elizabeth Billing, had died by the time of Martha's birth, and so she must have been daughter of an otherwise unknown third wife, Ann.  Widow Ann Collins's death record in 1861 proves that she was Ann Snow, daughter of Daniel and Ruth (Avery) Collins.  I suggest that Martha G. Collins was named for Gamaliel's deceased first wife, Martha "Patty" Gilbert, so the G would stand for Gilbert.

  • Census records.

1.^  His parentage is proven by his baptism and marriage records.

2.^  "15 Jul 1810, Charles, s. of Charles Whitney, bapt.," according to Watertown Records, Comprising East Congregational and Precinct Affairs, 1697 to 1737. Also, Record Book of the Pastors, 1686-1819 (Watertown, Massachusetts: Historical Society, 1906), p. 191.

3.^  Charles Whitney died 1 Apr 1899, Boston, MA, aged 90 years 5 months, of arteriosclerosis, surveyor, born Boston, living in Boston, buried in Worcester, according to: Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841–1910. From original records held by the Massachusetts Archives, volume 495, page 156. Online database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2004.

4.^  "[Whitney], Charles Jr. of Watertown and Martha G. Collins, [married] Dec. 29, 1840," according to Thomas W. Baldwin, ed., Vital Records of Hardwick, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850 (Boston, MA: 1917), p. 266.

5.^  Her death record gives her father as Gamaliel Collins of Hardwick, and wife Ann of Truro.

6.^  Calculated from her age at the 1855 state census and her age at death. There doesn't seem to be a record of her birth.

7.^  On 4 May 1869, Watertown, MA, Martha G. (Collins) Whitney died, aged 54 years, of lung fever, housekeeping, born Hardwick, MA, daughter of Gamaliel (b. Hardwick) and Ann (b. From original records held by the Massachusetts Archives. Online database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2004, volume 227, page 292. The marriage is also recorded on the same date in Boston, MA, volume 228, page 34. The data are the same except Charles is called a contractor, and Martha's age is given as 44.
