Overview

William Whitney, Esq. was named the Receiver of the Honour of Tutbury in 1577 and apparently died about 1579. He was followed in that position by William Sparke in 1579.

This document is the deposition of Richard Shipman, citizen and Merchant Tailor of London, who apparently had known William Whitney and had detailed knowledge of his financial dealings. He was deposed 11 Feb 1579/80 with questions related to these financial dealings.

Richard Shipman of Lond Citizen and m(er)chantailor of London of th'age of xxxix yeres or there abouts sworne and examined deposeth and saith as followeth

To the First inter(rogatory) he saithe that he did very well knowe the said Wm Whitney menc(i)oned in the said interr(ogatory) w(hi)ch Wm Whitney was as he thinketh Receyver of the honor of Tutbury and furth(e)r saithe that he hath known the said Wm Whitney ev(er) since two yeres before his deathe or there abouts And the occac(i)on of this exam(inants) acquaintance w(i)th the said Whitney was by the meanes of one Mr Gilbert S(er)vant to the Right honorable the L(ord) Trezorer who brought this exam(ina)nt acquainted with the said Whitney to th__ the said Whitney should be __ meane to Mrs Blanche Apparry to speake for this exam(ina)nt to Mr Rauffe Lane touchinge a debt due by the said Mr Lane to this exam(ina)nt the w(hi)ch the sade Whitney did accordingly at sundry tymes.

To the second interr(ogatory) he saith that at the shortly after the first acqua[intence] of this exam(inant) w(i)th the said Wm Whitney the said Whitney did decla[re] to this exam(inant) that his Aunt Mrs Blanche Apparry h[ad] gotten him the an office of Receipt the w(hi)ch office ______ kepe during his lief & he did knowe the same by ____

occac(i)on of familier talke hadd between [the s(ai)d] Whitney & this exam(inant) to th'end to wynn creddit w(i)th this deponent as he thinketh And further saithe that the said Whitney having occac(i)on to use money about the xx^th daie of m(ar)che before he died for the clering of his accompt he came to this exam(inan)t and did declare to this exam(inant) as that by reason of div(er)se somes of money w(hi)ch he hadd lent above? and was therof utterlie disapointed _____ Mr Controller Mr Tusser? & Mr Hansford? w(hi)ch Mr Handford hath satisffied the saide Whitney of such money as he the said Handford did owe? unto the said Whitney before his decease as the said Whitney did declare to this exa(minant) before his death and was by reason of the want of? the foresaid debts & other debts then oweing him thereof utterlie disapointed And Therefore required this exam(inant) as ev(er) he wold do him pleas(u)r that he wold nowe standhe(th?) in steed to helpe him to money to clere his accompt whereupon this ex(aminant) uppon his earnest request And for savegard of this office w(hi)ch the said Whitney did declare to this exa(minant) wold be forfeited if he then did not clere his said accompt receipt this did exam(inant) as and one Rob(er)t Barnby by this exa(minant) means did lend him of his owne and of one Barnbyes vij hundred pounds or there aboute maie daie the wh(i)ch somes of money this exam(inan)ts man() and the said Barnbys man w(i)th others did carry to the said Mr Horses house in Colman street in London who was then as this ex(aminant) thinke as he this ex(aminant) thinke sev(er)all rec(eivers) of the Duchie and there did paie it as he this ex(aminant) thinketh in the p(re)sens of the said Whitney him self at the lendinge of w(hi)ch said money the said the said Whitney did aswell make faithefull promise of the said office to this exam(inant) as div(e)se times before that time he hade done and also declaring at the first time of his p(ro)misses that his Aunt Mrs Blanch Parry had p(ro)___ed the said offic to him gratis and afterwards about iiij or or v fyve moneths after the paiem(en)t of the foresaid some of money the said Whitney did declare to this exam(inant) when he this deponent did loke for th'accomplishm(ent) of the said Whitneys p(ro)mise or the said office that the said offic coste him the said Whitney vij hundred pounds or there abouts and that it was worth as he said then a thousand pounds & did declare to this exam(inant) as he had some div(er)se times before that it was worthe ij^C m(ar)ks a yere besides all cha_ges? but whene he the said Whitney had the said money or of whom

Will(ia)m Brownles did receyve of one Smethwick his servant to the said Whitney the some of a C and ___ po Twenty pounds or there abouts wherof the said Whitney himself hadd xx^li and the residue came to the use of this Rob(er)t Barnby & of this exam(inant) or of bothe or one of them w(hi)ch said money so receyved was receyved in the country at Smithwick house? as the said Brownleys did tell this exa(minant) about october last before the decease of the said Whitney And further saithe that the this exam(inant) did also receyve of one Stubbes who was S(er)vant likewise to the said Whitney the some of one C^li and servante at the house of or there abouts at as he remembreth at this exam(inan)ts house in London about August or September last before the decease of the said Whitney w(hi)ch was for the discha(r)dge of certen debts due to this ex(aminant) by the said Whitney as he remembreth before the said vij hundred pounds be lent by the said Rob(er)t Barnby & this exam(inant) as before is specified in the seconde Interr() And further to this interr(ogatory) he cannot deposeth as to his nowe remembrance

4 Item to the iiij^th interr(ogatory) he saith that the said Whitney w(i)th one Mr Hamford? & one Mr Folliatt did understand ____ the some enter into bond unto this exam(inant)

in the some of iiij^{c li} or there abouts for the paiem(en)t of ij^c x^li _______ at a daie theren lymitted to one w(hi)ch was for a certen some of money w(hi)ch this exam(ina)nt did stand bond w(i)th the said Whitney unto one Mrs Wilbraham of London widow w(hi)ch money was taken uppe for vi monthes _____ from vi moneths to vi monthes was was prolonged borne? or th'use w(hi)ch money and in th'end this exam(ina)nt paid in november or december before the death of the said whitney w(hi)ch money this exa(minant) hathe not yet receyved ag___ And further saithe that also the said Whitney did enter into one other bond to his exa(minnt) for the paiem(ent) of a C^li to one Mr Caldwell or some frend of his w(hi)ch money this exa(minant) paied also to the said Caldwell or to Mr Sparke as he remembreth and also the [said Mr?] whitney did enter into one other bond to this exam(ina)nt in the some of iiij^{c li} for the paiem(ent) of ij^{c li} or there abouts as he remembreth for the w(hi)ch this exa(minant) stood bounde to one Mr Chapman as suerty w(i)th the said Whitney w(hi)ch money this exam(inan)t did also soe paied to the said Whitney to one Harry servant to the said Whitney as he remembreth also the said Whitney did enter into bonde to this exam(inan)t or to Barnby by this ex(aminant) appointm(en)t in the some of iiij^{C li} for the considerac(i)on of nyne? score pounds or there
