In 1886 he moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa, and followed his trade, that of carpenter, until 1890, when he moved to Washington Terrirory and resided for two years. He then returned to Missouri Valley and in 1894 he was elected city marshal of that place. Early in April of 1894, many residences and stores were burglarized. Marshal Whitney with other officers succeeded in locating the thieves, and on the 28th raided the house where they were stopping. In arresting the men Marshal Whitney was shot throught the heart and instantly killed. One of the thieves was captured and the other escaped, the former was subsequently lynched by the people for the murder. Whitney was very popular and well liked by all.

Nathaniel R.7 Whitney (Amaziah6, Abner5, John4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1), son of Amaziah6 and Sarah (Boyington) Whitney, was born 15 Jun 1818, Maryland, NY, and died 31 Mar 1884, Missouri Valley, IA.

He married 7 Jan 1841, Milltown, PA, Charlotte S. Rice. She was born 23 Feb 1820.
