My approach here would be to check and fill in the documentation on the two families. Try to follow these families, including the siblings of the two children in question, through the census to see if any patterns emerge. Also, Asa & Ira need pages of their own - following them might bring clues to light as well. What made you place them with Family:Whitney, John (1784-1871)? We don't know why Pierce placed them with the other family, but from his outline, his details on that family were very scarce.

Please change his name to Samuel Whitney.  As explained in the changes to the page I just made, the Husted information that his name was Daniel is not correct, alathough it was thought to be correct when the page was first created.

Compare this query with the information on Family:Whitney, David (1716-a1764). The marriage seems to match, but the parentage and later details (death location) for David do not match. Thoughts?

Robert - thank you for that - I'll post that in the reply to the query so others are not confused.

Also, I thought I'd mention that there are now 84 people who have joined our "Whitney Family History" group on Facebook.

Hi Richard,

You may or may not remember me, I transcribed a couple of wills a year or so ago for your groupAnyway, at that time we were emailing back and forth and you thought that maybe you had a breakthrough in the Whitney line, or you were really close.  Whatever happened with that?  I have a relative that is very interested in all of this and I think he is willing to finance some research.  Could you contact me and maybe we could talk?

Thanks,

Horace B. Whitney
Robert - please take a look at Family:Whitney, Horace B. (1830-1882). Note the m. in 1848 to Lucetta Frazier, supported by the marriage extracts. Also, in the census records, he and Lucetta are listed near other Frazier families, and the Horace Whitney, same age, married to Virginia, is also listed near these Frazier families in later census records, so I am fairly certain they are the same man.

Compare this family to Horace Burnham, son of Family:Whitney, Luther (1777-a1830). Pierce lists nothing but his first name. You added the additional information (middle name, marriage, death date) on 9/14/07, but with no sources. The wife's name and place of marriage matches, but the dates do not match at all (birth, marriage, or death). Where did you get the dates? Is this a case of two Horace B. Whitneys, perhaps father and son of uncle and nephew?

Can you help to identify the Mary Whitney, b. 5 Jan 1812 Portland, ME, d. 26 Jan 1878, Springfield, MO, who m. 30 Apr 1837, John Smith Phelps, who became Governor of Missouri?

See this biography as well as this one and this one.

Although many pages online list her as being from Portland, ME, this page lists her as from Hartford.

According to Archive:Buffalo, New York, Directories, there were 3 Whitney families in Buffalo in 1832 - a joiner with no listed first name who I have been unable to identify, Family:Whitney, Zerah (1784-1873) who was only there briefly and who moved away later that same here, and a man listed as "W. A. Whitney". Now I haven't been able to locate a "W.A.", but I *did* find a W.H. Whitney who was known to be in Erie County. Family:Whitney, William Henry (1779-1853) died in Aurora, Erie Co., NY. My suspicion in that the middle initial was either a transcription error, or someone said "H" and someone else heard "A". Very, very interesting is that this family had a daughter Maria, born 5 Jan 1817. I suspect that someone else mis-transcribed the "7" in 1817 as a "2".

Note that Aurora is just outside of Buffalo. Also, there is a Portland, NY in Erie Co.

Thoughts?

I am going to see what I can do to expand this family group this evening.

See Archive:Patterson, David Williams (1824-1892). I just spoke with a librarian at the CHS and they do indeed still contain Patterson's collection. She is now checking on the Benjamin Whitney manuscript. Note the other Whitney manuscripts that were in his collection.

I have a WHITNEY, William, m. Sarah -----, question too!
I have a dangling William & Sarah Whitney in my family tree too, but I have a couple of census(es?) with the children as Hattie (though my family records refer to her as Harriet(she was my 2nd great grandmother)), Josephine & William.

A couple of years ago, I had a conversation with Tim and this was the note he sent me:

"From the census records you provided, it appears that you are descended from William Whitney who was born about 1819 in Massachusetts. The 1850 census in Columbus, OH shows him age 30, the 1860 census of Dayton, OH shows him age 41, and the 1870 census of Indianapolis, IN shows him age 52. I found his widow in 1880, so he died sometime between 1870-1880.

Keep in mind that his marriage record shows that he was listed as "William Whitney, Jr.". I searched for other Whitneys in 1850 and found one, a "Wm Whitney", age 50, laborer, b. Mass. He was living just 6 pages away from your William. I suspect that he could have been your William's father.

You stated on Family Talk:Whitney, Elisha (1747-1815) that you think that your William's father was Elisha Whitney (1747-1815). However, this man's son William was born 17 Jun 1788 and is listed as having died unmarried. Because of the date discrepancy, I cannot see how this could be your William's father. This Elisha did have a son Elisha (1780-1823) who also had a son named William, but he was b. 25 Jan 1810 and is also listed as having died unmarried. "

The funny thing is that I found William and Sarah, but my grandmother's records have "Eliza?" listed as Harriet's mother, only dragging me back to the whole Elisha/William/Elisha/William mystery.

Does any of this sound any alarms with you or match any of your loose ends?

Any help would be appreciated!

Robert, God bless you. I never knew anything about my mother. I barely remember her. You have given me a great gift with this information. I now know my grandmother was LULU and my grandfather was Fred, I never knew that. Now I can at least feel like I had people attached to me instead of a void. Mary

You asked Ken about the discrepancy of his statement vs. the fact that Ebenezer d. 1801, West Indies. Look closer at that page - after he d., another Ebenezer was b. 1803.

Problem Page
Robert:

The page Archive:Some_of_the_Descendants_of_John_and_Elinor_Whitney was indeed very wrong! I corrected two HTML issues which were causing it to display improperly: 1) many font calls which were not closed properly were causing tables to not be closed properly, and 2) one table had an open table row statement when it should have been a close table row. The page is now displaying properly, but I did have to remove all font statements.

The import of the children to the name index pages has been completed. The edits made can be seen by selecting "Recent changes" and selecting "show bots", or by going to User:WRG-Robot and selecting "User contributions".

Many new pages were created that need to be added to the index. I am sure that some pages are no longer needed and need to be removed, but I'll have to write a script to get that listing. Note that the bot does NOT edit or use the large name index page, so it is safe to break it up. A future script might edit this page, but that is not coded, and I'll just code it to access the individual pages if we ever desire it to be automated to that degree.

Robert:

Please take a look at Pages needing attention. In an attempt to streamline the process, I am rewriting the scripts to update this page with their results. The current page has a dummy list, but one of the scripts is now running and should update it soon. I would suggest that we both add this page to our watchlist, and the "page changed" email will alert us to changes. If you can add it now, I'd like to make sure that that functionality is working for you.

Further updates might include having the script run automatically on a regular basis.

Thanks!

I was able to identify 5 of the 8 unidentified Whitney households in Maine in 1800. We're down to just three - Elizabeth of Portland, David of Bath, and Humphrey of Waterboro.
