It appears there is a mystery concerning how to interpret the 1870 census. It seems quite probable that Elias was enumerated twice.  1870 Census: Farmington, ME: enumerated June 7 & 8; Elias Reed, b. VT, resides with what appears to be 2 of his brothers, one born in VT, the other in ME.  They reside with Jonathan and Amanda Gardiner.  James must have died & Amanda has remarried.  Is this the same Elias who is enumerated in Lincoln?

1850 Census: Kingfield, ME; Elias, a child b. in VT lives in the family of James Reed, b. abt 1806 in ME & Amanda Reed, b. abt 1817 in VT; older brother Samuel b. in VT abt 1840, older brother Ephraim b. in NY abt 1842.

The births of Elias and Alice's children have not yet been found recorded in Lincoln, ME. The attribution of their places of birth and death are taken from their marriage and death records. The marriage record of Flossie also says Elias was born in Farmington.

1860 Census: Farmington, ME; Elias lives in the family of James and Amanda Reed; all are born in ME except Amanda, b. in VT

The marriage of Marion C. (Reed) Wyman, born about 1876, to Harry Berry, Boston, MA, 9 Dec 1907, says that Marion resides in Kingfield, ME, and is the daughter of Elias Reed and Olive Wyman.  This would mean that Marion's mother's maiden name was Wyman, and Marion also married a Wyman.  That is possible, but it seems that an error was made in the record about her mother's name. Why is Marion not mentioned in any other of Elias' family records, unless she is Clyda Reed?

Alice Mary Whitney (Robert, John, Edward), daughter of Robert and Mary E. (Bennett) Whitney), was born Aug 1847, Kingfield, ME, and died 24 Oct 1895, Lincoln, ME.

She married, 21 Mar 1866, Chesterville, ME, Elias Reed, son of James and Amanda (-----) Reed. He was born 8 Apr 1844, Vermont, and died 18 Mar 1936, Lincoln, ME.

Elias and Alice are both buried in West Broadway Cemetery, Lincoln, ME.

Elias' birth record in Lincoln, ME says he was born in Lincoln. The record is taken from a grave record. Therefore the place of birth in the record is suspect.

Elias' death record says he was the son of Samuel Reed, and was born in Vermont. However, Samuel is his brother, and James and Amanda Reed are his parents via the 1850 Census of Kingfield, ME.

Elias was a Civil War veteran, and he received a pension from the U.S. government.

The births of Elias and Alice's children have not yet been found recorded in Lincoln, ME. The attribution of their places of birth and death are taken from their marriage and death records. Elias' daughter Mary's marriage record says Elias was born in Farmington, ME. However, her death record says he was born in VT. The marriage record of Flossie also says Elias was born in Farmington.

Children of Elias and Alice Mary (Whitney) Reed:

i. Lillian Reed, b. 12 Jul 1868, prob. Lincoln, ME.
