He married firstly, 1 Jan 1864, Granville, NY, Amanda Cordelia Balch, daughter of John and Julia Ann (Pond) Balch. She was born 15 Aug 1844, Hartland, VT, and died 14 May 1871, Rutland, VT, aged 26 years 9 months, of childbirth. She was buried Center Cemetery, Hartland, VT.[2]
