John⁵ Whitney (Joshua⁴, Joshua³, Benjamin², John¹) son of Joshua⁴ and Phebe (-----) Whitney,^[1] was born 7 May 1749, Medway, MA,^[2], baptized 7 Jul 1751, Medway, MA,^[3] and died 21 Jan 1824, Pomfret, Chautauqua County, NY.^[4]

Marriage intentions were published 5 Dec 1767, Medway, MA, for him and Molly Carey. "The Banns between John Whitney & Molly Carey is forbidden by his Master Garnsey & Mother".^[5] He "a transient person, of Medway" married, 16 Feb 1768, Newton, MA, Molley Cary,^[6] parentage unknown. She was born 25 Jul 1751,^[7] and died after 3 Jan 1838, Erie County, PA.^[8]

Children of John⁵ and Molley (Carey) Whitney, probably incomplete:

i.	Hannah6 Whitney, b. 3 Sep 1768, Holliston, MA;[9] m. (int. 13 Aug 1790, Peru, MA), Gideon Richmond.[10]
ii.	Sally Whitney, b. 11 Jul 1773, Dedham, MA;[11] m. (int. 18 Sep 1794, Peru, MA), Asa Taft.[12]
iii.	John Whitney, b. bef. 3 Nov 1784;[13] d. 20 Feb 1871, Lafayette Township, Coles County, IL;[14] m. ca. 1808, Polly Gibbs.[15]

Notes

Another possible son is Asa Whitney (b1774-a1830) of Lisle, Broome Co., NY, whose marriage intentions were published in Peru, MA, in 1791. Asa's alleged son Chauncey married Sally (Whitney) Taft's daughter, which strengthens this theory.
