Image:henry whitney copy.jpg]]Capt. Henry Whitney, parentage unknown, was born say 1790, probably Bermuda, and died sometime between 1844 (when he was not listed as deceased in the announcement of his elder daughter's marriage) and 1851 (when he was listed as deceased in the announcement of his younger daughter's marriage).

He married, 31 Jan 1815, Devonshire, Bermuda, Amelia Martha Harriott,[1] died 4 Sep 1863, Devonshire, Bermuda "1863, Sept. 8: Amelia Martha Whitney, widow of Capt. Henry Whitney, died in Devonshire on Sept. 4, leaving a son and 2 daughters."[2]

Although some have identified him as the Henry Whitney who was harbor master at the port of Georgetown, Demerara, British Guiana (now Guyana), that Henry was assigned to his post in 1855, and this man was dead by 1851.

An extract of the will of Amelia Martha Whitney, written 13 Mar 1863 and probated 12 Jul 1864 reads as follows: "Dv, wd, dau of John Harriott (d), ch: Henry John (d, Dem, left ch), Francis Wm (res Dem), Anna Rebecca Watlington (w of John Thos), Amelia Christiana Watlington (w of Benjamin Wm), exec: sons-in-law Watlington, wit: Wm J. Cox, Wm Cox"[3]

Children of Henry and Amelia Martha (Herriott) Whitney (order uncertain):

i. Francis William Whitney, b. ca. 1819, Bermuda.
ii. Henry John Whitney, b. ca. 1820, Bermuda, d. 25 Oct 1861, Georgetown, Demerara. "1861, Dec. 10: Henry J. Whitney, aged 43, a native of Bermuda, died in Georgetown, Demerara, on Oct. 25.".[4] He was perhaps the Henry Whitney who was Harbour-Master at the port of George Town, Demerara, appointed 1855. Salary 500£
iii. Anna Rebecca Whitney, b. say 1824, m. 25 Jul 1844, Devonshire, Bermuda, Capt. John Thomas Watlington "1844, July 30: Anna Whitney, elder daughter of Capt. Henry Whitney, married Capt. John Thomas Watlington on July 25 in Devonshire, by Rev. J.F. Lightbourn."[5]
iv. Amelia Christiana Whitney, b. 1826, Bermuda, d. 21 Sep 1910, Devonshire, Bermuda. She m. 6 Nov 1851, Devonshire, Bermuda, Benjamin William Watlington. "1851, Nov. 11: Amelia Christiana Whitney, youngest daughter of the late Capt. Henry Whitney, married Benjamin W. Watlington in Devonshire on Nov. 6, by Rev. J.F. Lightbourn."[6]

Notes

He was perhaps related to Jeremiah Whitney, who m. 1 Aug 1815, Devonshire, Bermuda, Ruth Harriott (probably a second marriage based upon her age at death). She d. Devonshire, 23 Nov 1844, aged 78. He was perhaps the Jeremiah Whitney of Pembroke whose will was dated 5 Oct 1824 and whose administrators included Mrs. Ruth Whitney.

He could possibly have been the Henry Whitney, son of John Whitney (b1775-c1802), but if so, he would have had to have been born earlier in order to have been an executor in 1802.
