John Henry Whitney (John), son of John and Phebe (Sawins) Whitney, was born Mar 1834, VT, NH, OH, or NY (see census records below), and died 1912, IA. He was buried in Clarence Cemetery, Clarence, IA.
He married firstly, 10 Jul 1864, Oxford Mills, IA, Rebecca J. (Gregory) Ferguson,[1] daughter of James B. and Elizabeth (Lee) Gregory. She was born 8 Feb 1830, IN, and died 7 Jan 1897, IA. She had married firstly, before 1854, ----- Ferguson.
He married secondly, 22 Mar 1899, Clarence, IA, Mary Ann Colliver, daughter of Ira and Desire (Brown) Colliver.[2] She was born Jun 1845, Canada, and died after 1910.
He enlisted 12 Aug 1861, at age 27, as a Private in Co. B, 9th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged for disability 30 May 1862.

i. Hiram E. Whitney, b. 13 Nov 1865, Jones Co., IA; d. 11 Sep 1906, IA, aged 40 years 9 months 23 days; bur. Dayton Valley Cemetery, Dayton, IA; m. 23 Oct 1888, Clarence, IA, Minnie E. Brink. ii. Rosella K. Whitney, b. Jan 1869, Jones Co., IA; d. after 1921; m.(1) 16 Oct 1886, Dayton, IA, Archie Matthews; m.(2) 17 Oct 1892, Clarence, IA, Guy Clement Sturdevant.
John Henry and Mary Ann (Colliver) Whitney had no children.
