He married 26 Dec 1854, Rock Island, IL, Margaret Edde Wilcher, daughter of Josiah and Sarah (Meadows) Wilshire. She was born 15 Sep 1837, Knoxville, IL. She married secondly, M. E. Knapp.

He was the Sergt. Sanford R. Whitney who enlisted 1 Jul 1862 in Company D, 71st I. V. I., Rock Island Co., IL. - The past and present of Rock Island County, Ill., p. 251.
