Jonas Franklin Whitney, son of ----- and Ruth (-----) Whitney, was born 1823, Madison Co., NY, and died 1888, Chittenango, NY. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Chittenango, NY.[1]
He married before 1847, Matilda Edwina Morgan. She was born 1835, Madison Co., NY, and died 1908, NY. She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Chittenango, NY.[2]

i. Dewitt C. Whitney, b. ca. 1847, Madison Co., NY; d. 8 May 1931, Silver City, NM, aged 91 years;[3] m. St. Vincent de Paul, Silver City, NM, 15 Apr 1896, Mary Catherine Byrne,[4] d. 24 Dec 1933, Silver City, NM, aged 65 years,[5] dau. of Thomas and Catherine (Cassedy) Byrne. No children. - Enlisted 10 Mar 1865, Tompkins Co., NY, as a bugler, a Private, Co. D, 8th New York Cavalry, and was mustered out 27 Jun 1865, Alexandria, VA. Born Madison Co.; occupation, farmer; grey eyes, light hair dark complexion, height 5 ft. 3 inches; credited to Tompkins, Delaware Co.[6]
- Enlisted 21 Nov 1866, New York, NY, by Capt. Ogilby, for 3 years, of Sullivan, NY, aged 21, laborer, grey eyes, light hair, fair complexion, height 5' 4-4/8", in 17th Infantry 35, by 15th Infantry, discharged 3 Nov 1869, by expiration of service, at Point Jan Jose, CA, a Private.[7]
- On 23 Nov 1869, enlisted at Fort Conig, N.M., by Lt. Sartle, of Sullivan, NY, aged 24, soldier, grey eyes, light hair, fair complexion, height 5 ft. 4-1/2 in., in Co. K, 15th U.S. Infantry, second enlistment, discharged 23 Nov 1874, due to expiration of service, at New Orleans, LA, On 3 Oct 1874, as a Sergeant.[8]
- On 3 Dec 1874, enlisted at W. Merwin, NM, by Capt. Ellis, of Sullivan, NY, aged 30, soldier, grey eyes, light hair, fair complexion, height 5 ft. 4-1/2 in., in Co. C, 15th U.S. Infantry; discharged 1 Nov 1879 at Camp Chelm, W. T., a Sergt., char. good.[9]
