I found the following family in the 1930 census:
1930 U.S. Census, Anacortes, Skagit Co., WA, p. 23A Whitney, Calbert W. Head M W 26 M 22 Colorado Wisconson Illinois Laborer, Box Factory -- Alfie A. Wife F W 24 M 19 Norway Norway Norway -- David C. Son M W 3&10M S Oregon Colorado Norway -- Jack L. Son M W 6M S Oregon Colorado Norway

Note that Calbert's father Lyle Whitney was not a turnip farmer. ;-)

Lyle's father William D. Whitney was a farmer, so I guess he could have planted turnips! :-)
1880 U.S. Census, Elkhart, Bates Co., MO, p. 15 Whitney, W. W M 30 Farmer Ill Ny Ny -- Elizabeth W M 25 Wife Keeping House Ioway Oh Oh -- F W F 6 Dau Mo Ill Ioway -- G W F 3 Dau Mo Ill Ioway -- Liell W M 6M Son Mo Ill Ioway (born in November)

1860 U.S. Census, Mission, LaSalle Co., MO, p. 271 James H Whitney 51 M Farmer 6500 2000 Ny Maria " 39 F " Sanford S " 16 M Ill Franklin " 14 M " Lydia C " 12 F " (twins) Thirditia " 12 F " (twins) William P. " 10 M " Alice M. " 7 F " Mills H. " 4 M " Martha J. " 11M F "
1850 U.S. Census, Big Grove, Kendall Co., IL, p. 289 James H Whitney 42 M Farmer N York Maria " 30 F " Edgar " 6 M Ill Franklin " 4 M " Cornelia " 3 F " (twins) Adelia " 3 F " (twins) William " 4M M " Forter?? " 18 M "
So your line appears to be: Steve, Jack, Calbert, Lyle, William, James H. Whitney. This is about where the census records run out, so we'll now need to search for James H. Whitney. Perhaps we can find him in Pierce.

It appears that we have some of the children linkages wrong for the children of this family. I need to do some editing here to correct this. In the meantime, your Lyall A. Whitney does appear in Pierce on page 643. See Archive:The Descendants of John Whitney, page 643.

Percy Bacon
I just found the following:
1900 U.S. Census, Mesa, Mesa Co., CO, p. 19A Bacon, George W. Head Jul 1847 52 Indiana Farmer -- Mary E Wife Mar 1848 52 Kentucky -- James B Son May 1874 26 Illinois Indiana Kentucky Farm Laborer -- Fred W Son Oct 1876 23 Indiana Indiana Kentucky Farm Laborer -- Percy M Dau Dec 1880 19 Illinois Indiana Kentucky Teaching -- Oliva DinL Jan 1881 19 Colorado New York Kansas
So Percy was actually Percy M. Bacon.
awww he was still a turnip... This should be fun for your family. This is a mountain more data than any previous attempt by any of your family. Aaron..
Looks like we are related at Mary Bray.
