This case began with a complaint made by Thomas Whitney of Castleton, gent. against William Watkin Lewis and Evan Lloyd concerning lands in Craswell. It seems that Thomas had used this land to guarantee his payment to the family of Howell Watkins, who he was accused of murdering. The defendants claimed that he had willfully murdered the man, but Thomas claimed that Howell had been accidentally hurt in an altercation. It seems that Howell Watkins was actually married to Margerie Whitney, daughter of Thomas' eldest brother Nicholas Whitney. Thomas stated that he was acquitted of the charges of murder by a grand jury, who found it was a case of manslaughter.
Note that due to the lands in Craswell mentioned in this case, we know that this was Thomas Whitney, son of Robert Whitney of Castleton, who had bequeathed this land to Thomas in his will, dated 1555.
The folios in this document are numbered in reverse chronological order, with folio 6 being the original complaint, folio 5 an edited copy of 6, folio 4 a demurrer by the defendants, folio 3 the answer of the defendants, folio 2 the replication of the complainant, and folio 1 an edited copy of folio 2. They are listed below in chronological order, rather than numerical order to assist in following the case.
