ANCESTORY [sic] AND GENEALOGY OF THE WHITNEY FAMILY.

COMPILED BY ASA P. WHITNEY

Extract from records: John Whitney, the son of Thomas Whitney and Mary Bray, and grandson of the last Sir Robert Whitney, was the first of that name who came to America. He was baptized in St. Margaret's Church, London, July 20th, 1592. Thomas was not a native of the city, but came from one of the oldest and most distinguished families in the West of England, the "Whitneys of Whitney", on the banks of the Wye, where crumbling ruins of their castle are still to be seen. His Uncle, James Whitney, was knighted as Lord of Whitney, Kings chapel, Clifton and Sheriff of Herefordshire at Winsor, in 1570. His grandfather, Sir Robert, was knighted by Queen Mary in 1553, and represented that county in Parliament; and from the latter may be traced a long knightly line of Whitneys and DeWhitneys, to the 13th century when the name originated, and from thence beyond to the Norman ancestors, with other names, to the Conquest of England by the Normans!

John Whitney, son of Thomas, received a good education in the family "Westminster School" now know as "St. Peter's School", in April, 1635. (by extract from rolls in office of Chancey Lane) received certificates permitting him and Ellinor, his wife, and children, John, Richard, Nathaniel, Thomas and Jonathan to embark for America on board the "Ship Elizebeth Ann", Roger Cooper Master. In June 1635 they arrived, and settled in Watertown, Mass. In July andother son, Joshua was born to them, and June 6th, 1643 Benjamin was born, from whom our family of Whitneys came.
