Alabama was part of the Mississippi Territory from 1798 to 1817. The northern portion, previously a part of Georgia, was ceded in 1802 and made a part of the Mississippi Territory in 1804. Alabama became a territory in 1817, and a state in 1819. U.S. Census records for Alabama are available for the following years:
- 1800 - Present day Alabama was a part of three areas in 1800. The northern portion was a part of Georgia, the southern portion was a part of Mississippi Territory, and the extreme southern portion was a part of Spanish West Florida.
- 1810 - The U.S. Census has been lost for all counties, however, a territorial census exists for Washington County.
