Richard Ostrom7 Whitney (John6, Samuel5, John4, Henry3, John2, Henry1), son of John6 and Patty (Chase) Whitney, was born 15 May 1811, Henderson, NY, and died after 1873.

He married firstly, 17 Jul 1832, Ellisburgh, NY, Laura Reed, daughter of Knight Dexter and Polly (Nutting) Reed. She was born 20 Jun 1811, Henderson, NY, and died 14 Jul 1843, Ellisburgh, NY, where she was buried in the Reed Cemetery.

He married secondly, 3 Mar 1844, Henderson, NY, Elizabeth Hungerford, daughter of Seeley and Dorcas (Mallory) Hungerford. She was born 18 Oct 1812, Clinton, NY, and died after 1873.

Phoenix says the following:

". . . a farmer . . . . They settled in the north-west part of Ellisburgh . . . . Their home is in the north-west part of the town, about a mile from Lake Ontario."

Children of Richard Ostrom7 and Laura (Reed) Whitney, all born Ellisburgh, NY:

i. Esther8 Whitney, b. 4 Jun 1833; d. 28 May 1841, Ellisburgh, NY, and was buried in the Reed Cemetery.
ii. Mary Louisa Whitney, b. 6 Jun 1835; m. 1854, Henderson, NY, Livingston Stevens, son of Charles and Abby (Edmonds) Stevens, b. Henderson, NY; a farmer. They lived in Ellisburgh, NY; then in Watertown, WI; and again in Ellisburgh, NY.
iii. Knight Dexter Whitney, b. 7 Sep 1837; unmarried; enlisted at Belleville, in Ellisburgh, 9 May 1861, in Co. K, 24th Reg., N. Y. S. Vol. Infantry; was shot through the right lung, 14 Sep 1862, in the battle of South Mountain, VA; died of the wound, 22 Oct 1862, at the Emory General Hospital, in Washington, DC; and was buried the next day, in the Soldiers' Cemetery in Washington.
iv. Clark Whitney, b. 10 Jun 1840; m. 1873, Maria Aldrich; a locomotive-engineer. They lived in Lansing, MI, in 1874, without children. He served in the Union army during the war of 1861, for three years (first in Co. K, 24th Reg., N. Y. S. Vol. Infantry), and was transferred to the 86th Reg., N. Y. S. Volunteers, before his discharge.

v. Charles Ostrom8 Whitney, b. 12 Jan 1845; d. 20 Feb 1845, Ellisburgh, NY, and was buried in the Reed Cemetery.
vi. Hannah Elizabeth Whitney, b. 8 Aug 1846; d. 13 Jun 1853, Ellisburgh, NY, and was buried in the Reed Cemetery.
vii. Dorcas Flavilla Whitney, b. 9 Mar 1848; and lived there, with her parents, unmarried, in 1874.
viii. Ada Rosavilla Whitney, b. 5 Apr 1850; d. 29 May 1858, Ellisburgh, NY, and was buried in the Reed Cemetery.
ix. George Washington Adelbert Whitney, b. 14 May 1856; and lived there, with his parents, in 1874.
