James Marshal⁷ Whitney (Asaph⁶, Jonathan⁵, Benjamin⁴, Benjamin³, Benjamin², John¹), son of Asaph⁶and Bethiah (Hopkins) Whitney, was born 5 Apr 1819, Greenwich, NY, died 2 December 1909, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, and was buried 6 Dec 1909, Lot 39 Section 1, Little Rock Township Cemetery, Plano, Kendall County, Illinois.

He married, 6 Jun 1847, Amboy, New York, Mary E. Huntley, daughter of Moses and Clarissa (Beckwith) Huntley. She was born 12 Feb 1827, Jamesville, Onondaga County, New York, died 26 Jan 1909, Chicago, Illinois, and was buried 29 Jan 1909, Lot 39 Section 1, Little Rock Township Cemetery, Plano, Kendall County, Illinois. Moses Huntley was born 24 May 1796, Machias, Maine, and died 18 Jul 1887 at Winnebago County, Illinois.

He is a carpenter and millwright; resided Amboy, New York, and Plano, Illinois.

JAMES M. WHITNEY

Was A Grand Old Patriot Of The Common People

James Whitney was born in Greenwich, Washington County, N.Y. April 5th, 1819, and died at his daughter's, Mrs. John Daily's home in Chicago, December 2nd.

June 6th 1847, he was united in marriage at Albany, N.Y. to Miss Mary E. Huntley, who proceeded him in death, February of this year.

To this union was born seven children, six sons and one daughter: James E., of Los Angeles, Cal.; Let of Indianapolis; Mark, Fred, George, Frank and Mrs. John Daily, of Chicago.

In 1867 Mr. and Mrs. Whitney moved to Plano where Mr. Whitney became part of the great Harvester Co., working at bench work, as a carpenter for the William Deering Harvester Co., and Plano Companies thirty-five years.

He was a kindly, faithful, and good citizen and one of the most patriotic Republicans that ever lived. He was one of the old land marks of earlier Plano days and about the last one to go.

Services were held in Chicago Saturday. The remains were brought here on the noon train and services held in the M.E. church conducted by Rev. Milnes and the remains laid away beside his wife in Plano Cemetery.

Note: 1.) Not Daily, but Daley; John W. Daley who married Florence G. Whitney June 7, 1880 in Plano, Illinois.

2.) son living in Indianapolis, Indiana was Williston Herbert Whitney.^[1]

From the front page (center) of "The Lisbon Comet" (a newspaper of general circulation in Plano, Kendall County, Illinois) on Wednesday Feb. 3, 1909:

"GRANDMA WHITNEY GONE. Was Lovable Patriotic Christian Soul That Will Be Missed."

Mary E. Huntley was born at Jamesville, N.Y., February 12, 1827 and died at the home of her son Marcus, 1194 Northwestern Ave., Chicago, Tuesday evening January 26.

June 6 1847 she was united in marriage to James M. Whitney at Amboy, N.Y. In 1867 they moved to Plano where for 36 years Mr. Whitney was employed in the Harvester works and it was here in the humble but honest home that the good mother reared her family of seven children, all of them loved and reverenced her and will do so as long as they live. The writer has known Mr. Whitney since he was a small boy and it was always the same kind smiling good old soul. There was never a more patriotic woman living than Mrs. Whitney.

She caused to be erected at her front gate a flag pole that always had the colors flying on every national holiday. Her birthday came on the same day as that of Lincoln's and the good old soul was layed away on McKinley's birthday.

Her sickness was of only one day's duration. Taken, in the morning apparently happy and well, with a severe pain in her stomach getting worse gradually until evening when it went to her heart and she droped away. Up to this time she had been in her usual robust health going to the hospital daily with Mr. Whitney where he was being treated for cancer and her dying so sudden was a great shock to the bereaved family.

Mrs. Whitney was a devoted christian and a member of the Plano M.E. Church where services were held Friday at 1:30 PM conducted by Rev. H.E. Sweitzer. Short services were held in Chicago at the home before the remains were brought here on the 1 O'Clock train.

The remains were buried in the Plano cemetery. The casket was covered with beautiful floral offerings and cut flowers.

She leaves the aged husband, six sons and one daughter who will miss this good wife and mother. The children are James E. Los Angeles, Cal., Williston, Indianapolis, Ind., Marcus W., Mrs. Florence Daily, Fred A., Frank E. and Geo. G., Chicago. All of them were present at the funeral except James who lives in California.

The family wish to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to those who were so kind at the time of their mother's death and burial.^[2]

iii.	Marcus W. Whitney, b. 15 Mar 1852, Amboy, New York; m. Ella E. Brady on November 27, 1876 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
iv.	Florence Gertrude Whitney, b. 19 May 1856, NY; m. John W. Daley on June 7, 1880 at Plano, Kendall County, Illinois.
v.	Fred A. Whitney, b. 17 Oct 1861, Amboy, Oswego County, New York; d. 18 Apr 1911, Chicago, Illinois; buried 21 Apr 1911, Little Rock Township Cemetery, Lot 39, Sec. 1, Plano, Kendall County, Illinois. (Chicago, Cook County, Illinois death cert # 00020935). Fred did not have any known children.
vi.	Frank E. Whitney, b. 25 Nov 1863, Amboy, NY; m. Martha Johannsen Moeller on October 29, 1892 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
vii.	George G. Whitney, b. 22 Apr 1867, Amboy, Oswego CountyNew York; d. 12 Sep 1944, Chicago, Illinois, bur. 15 Sep 1944, Little Rock Township Cemetery, Lot 39, Sec. 1, Plano, Kendall County, Illinois; resided Plano, Illinois. (Chicago, Cook County, IL death certificate # 0025756). George did not have any known children.
