James W. Whitney was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, 2 Sep 1843. Attended school at Baldwin university, Berea, Ohio. Enlisted in Battery D, 1st O. V. V. Lt. Artillery 15 Aug 1862. Was in thirty-one engagements and eleven hard fought battles; once taken prisoner; honorably discharged at Greensboro, North Carolina, 10 Jun 1865, the war being over.
