You indicated that you are related to a line of Baxter Whitney.  Do you know anymore about this?  Baxter Whitney was born in Waterbury Vermont in 1812, he left Vermont for Kansas in 1866.  He had a brother Solon and 5 children, Arthur Barton Whitney, Katherine Amelia Whitney (married AB Whiting), George Baxter Whitney (died at age 15 in 1851), William Wallace Whitney (died at age 24 in the Civil War) and Emeline B. Whitney (born 1844).

I have never heard him referred to as famous nor linked to Maine so your Baxter may a different one.

DNA Tests

First, welcome to the WRG website! I saw your message to Robert Ward and thought I'd send you a reply. We would LOVE to test a direct descendant of the Whitneys of Whitney-on-Wye, but we have not been able to locate any to be tested. As far as we know, the direct line died out back in 1670 when the manor was inherited by daughters. There must be other male-line descendants of other brothers from earlier generations, but as yet we have not made contact with them.
