Joshua to Silas Whitney

Doug,

The birth, on 20 Mar 1771, of Silas⁵ Whitney, son of Joshua⁴ (Joshua³, Benjamin², John¹) is found in the Medway vital records. I think he is the same Silas Whitney who married, 16 Mar 1791, Tryphena Lane, also in Medway. They had two children recorded in Medway, Elias and Jemima. That is the last record I have found of that couple. I find Simeon G. Whitney listed in the 1830 census of Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY, and that is the first record I have found of him. I am interested in connecting Silas to Simeon. What evidence did your great-aunt have of that connection? What further did she know about both Silas and Simeon?

By the way, I, too, descend from Joshua³ Whitney, through a younger son, Gershom⁴.

Silas Whitney

The Silas Whitney born in Medway Mar. 20, 1771 was the son of Joshua⁵ and Jemima (Clark) Whitney. I think you've both omitted a Joshua. Silas would be Silas⁶ Whitney (Joshua⁵, Joshua⁴, Joshua³, Benjamin², John¹)

Huldah, Second Wife of Silas Whitney

Doug,

I think I can identify Huldah. You say that she was born 1774, and died 4 Oct 1846, Rochester, New York. I tried using the L.D.S. Familysearch.org web site. I hunted for a Silas Whitney with wife Huldah, and it produced one, a certain Huldah Tilden, of Sandisfield, MA. Then I looked for a Huldah Tilden born about 1774, and it produced Huldah Tilden, daughter of Thomas Turner Tilden and his wife Martha Stillman, born 10 Mar 1775, Sandisfield, MA, and died 4 Oct 1846, location not specified. It also gave a first marriage for her, 21 Apr 1793, Sandisfield, MA, to Henry Pease, and a string of children. The older ones were born in Sandisfield, and the younger ones in Livonia, Livingston Co., NY. Henry Pease died 8 Jan 1827, in Livonia. Livonia is close to Geneseo.

If this is the right connection, and it seems so to me, then Huldah was widow Huldah (Tilden) Pease, from 1827 on, and available to be the second wife of your Silas Whitney. Of course she was not the mother of any children by Silas, who must have married her after 1836, when she was 61 years old.

I'm not sure how you would prove this, but I offer it for what it's worth.

Whitney DNA Surname Project

Hi Doug,

We have also been researching this line in New York. We are trying to determine whether the Silas Whitny in our line is the same as your line. We have joined the whitney DNA surname study to see if we can prove our line. I don't know if you are familiar with the Surnname Project or not but if not you can find a link to the information on the bottom of the main page of the WRG site.

Many Whitney descendants have joined the test to compare our markers to see how we are connected to each other and to John and Elinor or Henry or Samuel.

We have been trying to determine our line since the 1930's. Top researchers have worked on it but we find ourselves needing to rely on DNA matches since our Silas has not been able to be proven with records. All we really know is that he was in Ontario County New York and fathered a child named Alonzo Wells Newcomb Whitney. He may be the son of Silas Whitney, there is an unnamed Whitney son in the Census records who would be the right age to be our Silas Newcomb Whintey. However, there are virtually no records of such a person by that name in NY or anywhere else for that matter.

DNA is likely the only way we will ever answer this question one way or another. We have done other tests of WRG members and some are close but the only one other is a 100% match is Lowell Whitney. Unfortunately he can only trace his line to Ohio. His family ledgend is that the father of his ancestor Thomas L. Whitney was born in NY.

Since you know your line without question we are hoping that you would be willing to join the Whitney Surname DNA study. We would be happy to pay for the 67 marker test if you will. I know you don't need it for your line but if we match you will know more information about you line both from my family and from Lowell Thomas Whitney's family.

If you would consider doing this it would be greatly appreciated. Also cousin Patty has researched this NY line and has many records about your family that I know she would love to share with you as well. She is doing the Document research and I am handling the DNA part.
