James Jefferson7 Whitney (John Merrick6, James Rex5, Caleb4, William3, Joshua2, John1), son of John Merrick6 and Clarissa (Montgomery) Whitney, was born 11 Jan 1834, and died at 11pm 13 Sep 1896, Fayette, MS.

He married, 18 Feb 1858, Josephine Darden. She was born 19 Oct 1830/8, and died 14 Aug 1914.

He resided Fayette, MS.

He was a Captian in Co. H of the 4th Mississippi Cavalry with General Wert Adams as Commander of the Brigade, and General N. B. Forest as Division Commander. He enlisted in Apr 1862 and served until the end of the war. His company surrendered at Gainsville, AL, under General Forest. He was a lawyer for 25 years and also served as a legislator.
