Family Group Record Pages
Andaleen: The work you're doing on the site is fantastic! Now that you've had a chance to create / edit several pages, what do you think? Is there anything we can do to make things easier or to explain better?
Keep in mind that we're planning to convert the GEDCOM files over to Family pages in the near future. At this time we're basically testing those pages out to see what format is best, etc.

Quick Start Guide

Although it's still being fleshed out, take a look at the Quick Start Guide that I have created. My thought is that we'd have a link to this guide near the top of the front page, under the title. Feel free to add content to the guide, especially in the 4th page, which needs help.

Family Pages
Andaleen:
My thinking has changed on these pages since I wrote that note to you. I now think that I am going to make the gedcom information available, but that it will be in a 'read-only' format - no editing there. That would basically be a place to go and look up information and then add it to the family outlines we create. I would encourage you to go forward with working on the family pages as you were, but with a slight twist... see the page Template talk:FamilyTemplate for more information.

Estate Information
Andaleen:
I agree with you regarding the estate information on the page of Whitney, Isaac (1746-?). What was your source of information for this? Did it come from one of our databases? If so, which one?
Also, as an FYI, I have seen that you have sometimes changed the links to people's pages, such as changing a blank death year to a question mark. If you ever need to do this where the page already exists, do you know how to change the name of an existing page? If not, let me know and I can tell you.

Databases
Andaleen:
Something that you might be interested in - I now have the GEDCOM databases somewhat online here on the wiki. Go to Archives - Databases and you'll see three links. These go to John Whitney in each of the databases. Take a look at how I have linked to each of these from this page: Family:Whitney, Moses (1655-a1729). See the Links section at the bottom? That will allow people to see the database entries from the family outline. To get the specific link to use, I just started from the Archives - Databases page, went to John the immigrant, and drilled down to find the person whose page I was working on. Let me know if this isn't clear.

Databases, continued
It's 1am and I'm sleepy, so my answers are going to be brief. :-) Yes, I've figured out how to get the databases showing on the site, but no, I don't want you to stop importing. I think there are many benefits to having this data on editable pages on the site. I envision all of this data eventually being moved in here and the gedcoms less important, though perhaps still around. I've started to add links to the various databases from my pages so I can contrast and compare, making sure that the family outline comprises the best of all sources.
Also, I did a lot of work adding detail and source citations to this page: Family:Whitney, Ezra (1731-a1800) - not sure why I'm telling you that other than you might want to look at it as an example.
Regarding the confusion - how did they look different? Have you picked a different skin? Which one?
The links are editable, but the contents on those linked pages are not. I envision some of the links added in there WILL be to editable pages, so I'm not sure about changing the text of those sections. I plan to change the pages in those databases to display additional information - what the database is, who to write to make changes, etc. Would that solve your issues?

Cousin Marriages

I agree - we shouldn't have the children in two places. If we had a situation where a man and a woman, both descendants of the Whitney family married, I would put the children under the father so that the surname of the children would mimic the 'head' of the family group's surname.
In this case, we have two females, both descended from Whitneys, whose children married and had a family. In this case, the Whitney descent is 'equal' between the two, so I'd place the children under their father's branch.
I see what you've done by creating a page for both Gilbert and another page for Sarah. For a case like this, I'd delete Sarah's page entirely and just link to her husband's page from the page where she's a child with her parents.
In the places where I am linking from the source documents to the wife of a Whitney, the link is actually to her husband's page, not hers. Think of it as a shared family group page, but its title can only come from one of the people in the marriage, with the following rules to determine which should get the 'title':
- If both have the surname Whitney, the man gets the page named after himself.
- If only one spouse has the surname Whitney, they get the page named after themselves, regardless of sex.
- If neither spouse has the Whitney surname, then the direct Whitney descendant gets the page named after themselves.
- If neither spouse has the Whitney surname and both are descended from Whitneys, the man gets the page named after himself.
Does that make sense?

Kudos for the Great Work!
Andaleen,
You have been very busy, and have achieved a huge amount of work! Congratulations! When you volunteered to help, and when I accepted, I suppose neither of us could visualized the volume of work involved. Nevertheless, you've been plugging away at transferring my entire six-generation study into Family Group Records, and making huge progress. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I've been busy importing all the archive pages from the old website, and I've just finished cleaning up and sourcing the first three generations of descendants of John and Elinor. Next I'll be going through some of the archive pages and putting links to the family group records and back.
Tim's involved in importing the Phoenix book, the census index pages, and census data pages. He's also looking into creating a more advanced search engine.

Family Group Pages

Last weekend a thought occurred to me - that it would be possible to write a program to automate the parsing, formatting, and uploading of all of the families in Pierce. I have been working all week on this, with Robert's assistance, and tonight we uploaded about 1,700 family group pages! We decided to upload anything in Pierce from the 6th generation onwards, since that is where you were at currently. I have gens 1-5 as well, we just didn't upload them. Tomorrow I am planning to see which pages in gen 5 are missing, and uploading them as well.
I think there is still value in continuing with Robert's Study, but we'll probably need to all talk about what needs to be done now. Also, there will be many more tasks that will need to be done (reviewing all of these uploaded pages, for example!)
In any event, I know Robert and I want to thank you for all of the hard work that you have done so far. I hope that by taking this project a huge step forward that we haven't made you feel as though your efforts were in vain, because I know neither of us do! I'm off to sleep now, but I'm sure you'll hear more in the next few days.
Take a look at all of the new pages - it's great! :-)
