Lafayette J.⁸ Whitney (Thomas⁷, Phinehas⁶, Samuel⁵, William⁴, Nathaniel³, John², John¹), son of Thomas⁷ and Hannah (Preston) Whitney, was born 21 Apr 1827, Washington County, Ohio, and died 18 Apr 1895, Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana.

He married, 21 Apr 1858, Delaware County, Indiana, Mary Matilda Snyder, parentage unknown. She was born 5 Apr 1841, West Virginia, and died 8 Nov 1912, Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana.

When Lafayette married Mary, he adopted her brother Uriah Snyder, born 1851, Indiana.

i.	Minerva Ann9 Whitney, b. 12 Jan 1859, Delaware County, Indiana; d. 11 Aug 1940, Delaware County, Indiana; m. 29 Aug 1883, Delaware County, Indiana, Dr. William A. Spurgeon. He was son of Wiley and Mary Frances (McKinney) Spurgeon, b. 1 Feb 1855, and d. 21 Oct 1940. He was president of Muncie Gear Works.
ii.	Nancy Emma Whitney, b. 18 Jan 1860, Delaware County, Indiana; m. 27 Jan 1882, Delaware County, Indiana, William Leonard Compton.
iii.	John Lincoln Whitney, b. 3 Jan 1861, Delaware County, Indiana; d. 18 Aug 1938, Giard, Ohio [?possibly Girard, Trumbull County?]; m. 1 Jan 1884, Delaware County, Indiana, Clara Bell Linville. She was b. 16 Oct 1862, Indiana, and d. 1936.
iv.	Laura Jane Whitney, b. 6 May 1862, Delaware County, Indiana; m. 3 Sep 1890, Delaware County, Indiana; m. 3 Sep 1890, Delaware County, Indiana, Malachi Swift. He was son of John and Mary (-----) Swift, b. 1862.
v.	Nellie Beecher Stowe Whitney, b. 22 Aug 1865, Delaware County, Indiana; d. 30 Apr 1900, Delaware County, Indiana; m. 25 Aug 1889, William Ellis Martin. He was son of Andrew and Mariemna (Knott) Martin, b. 8 Oct 1861.
