Castleton

Jump to navigationJump to searchThe motte-and-bailey castle which gave Castleton its name was apparently built shortly after the Conquest by a follower of Walter FitzOsborn. It is in ruins, and probably has been for centuries. The Whitneys of Castleton could not have lived in it, but in some house now vanished, but nearby. Possibly it was a farmhouse, since in 1666, "... the farm of Castleton, situated in Llanfair-y-cwm, esteemed as one-third of the Manor of Clifford ..." was sold.[1]
