George Appleton8 Whitney (George Ransom7, Appleton Downer6, Asa5, Joshua4, William3, Joshua2, John1), born Berea, Ohio, 28 Nov 1838; married in Elyria, Ohio, 2 Dec 1869, Mary Arabella Patterson, born 10 May 1850.
He was born in Berea, Ohio. He was educated at Berea, Ohio, and was a soldier in the war for the Union. After the war closed he engaged in manufacturing business in Berea. He seems to have inherited a natural mechanical genius from some source, possibly from the same fountain head from which Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton-gin, received his. He has had several inventions patented. He is now a manufacturer at Vandalia, Illinois; resided Defiance, Ohio, and Vandalia, Illinois.
