p. 53, #445: Susanna5 WHITNEY of Shrewsbury and John GILFORD published their intentions of marriage 25 Feb 1750, Worcester, MA, according to Worcester vital records. They had a son Samuel GUILFORD of Spencer, MA.

p. 53, #446: Mary5 WHITNEY and John HARRINGTON of Waltham published their intentions of marriage, 20 Dec 1766, Westborough, MA, according to Westborough vital records. They had seven children recorded in Westborough.

p. 53, #448: Deborah5 WHITNEY was born 30 Jul 1749, not 30 Jan 1749, according to Westborough vital records.

p. 53, #451: Hannah5 WHITNEY had an illegitimate daughter Elizabeth WARREN, born 27 Jan 1779, Westborough, MA, according to Westborough vital records. Elizabeth married, 5 Dec 1793, Marlboro, VT, Luther WINCHESTER, also a WHITNEY descendant: Luther WINCHESTER [Lucy HARRINGTON, Isaac, Daniel, Sarah3 WHITNEY, John2, John1].

p. 53, #136: Elnathan4 WHITNEY married 24 Sep 1729, not 24 Sep 1728, Sarah PERRY, according to Roxbury vital records. She was baptized 16 Nov 1701, Watertown, MA, daughter of John and Sarah (PRICE) PERRY.

p. 53, #452: Elnathan5 WHITNEY was born 19 Mar 1739, not 8 Mar 1729, according to Waltham vital records, and so was the fourth child, not the first.

p. 53, #453: We are sure that John5 WHITNEY was a cordwainer, and living in Waltham on 14 May 1759, when he was appointed administrator of his father's estate. There seems to be some confusion between this man and #304 on page 73. Most sources say that the latter was the one who married, 4 Jul 1753, Watertown, MA, Mary BENJAMIN. Tending to contradict this is the record of the estate of John4 WHITNEY, #98 on page 44, 18 May 1776, when the heirs cited were sons Abraham, Ezekiel, and Stephen WHITNEY, without mention of John. Also contradicting this is the fact that the marriage record calls the groom "of Waltham", which this man was, and #304 was not. As a result, I deduce that it was this man who married Mary BENJAMIN, and whose record is found under #304 on page 73. Confusing the matter is Bond, who gives both these men as husbands of two different Mary BENJAMIN ladies, with two different dates (31 May 1753 and 4 Jul 1753), whereas only one marriage date appears in the vital records, 4 Jul 1753, both at Waltham and Watertown. The identity of Mary (BENJAMIN) WHITNEY is not apparent, as there were at least four of an appropriate age: Mary, daughter of Jonathan and Susanna (NORCROSS) BENJAMIN, born 24 May 1726; Mary, daughter of Daniel and Mary (BOND) BENJAMIN, baptized 30 Jan 1726; Mary, daughter of Jonathan and Annabelle (EVE) BENJAMIN, born 16 Feb 1734/5; and Mary, daughter of Samuel and Mary (HAMMOND) BENJAMIN, born 19 Feb 1735. One of these married Jonas GALE, 10 Mar 1747; one married John5 WHITNEY, 4 Jul 1753; and one married Jonas HASTINGS, 26 Feb 1756. Because the only child was named Samuel, I tend to favor the last of these for the wife of John5 WHITNEY, but proof has not yet been found.

p. 53, #454: Aaron5 WHITNEY married Margaret CORNET or CORNIT or CORNISH, according to Newton vital records.

p. 53, #455: Samuel5 WHITNEY died 28 Dec 1751, Waltham, MA, according to Waltham vital records.

p. 53, #456: Ebenezer5 WHITNEY was not the one who married Abigail BROWN. Instead, it was Ebenezer6 WHITNEY [Ebenezer5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3, John2, John1], born 24 Dec 1737, Sutton, MA. This Ebenezer5 WHITNEY moved to North Carolina, where he married, 30 Apr 1777, Guilford County, NC, Jemima POWELL.

p. 53, #457: Elnathan5 WHITNEY was born 18 Mar 1741/2, not 28 Mar 1741, according to Waltham vital records.

p. 53, #458: Sarah5 WHITNEY married, 16 Nov 1769, Upton, MA, James WATKINS, according to Waltham vital records. They had three children, one born in Upton and two in Townshend, VT.

p. 53, #459: This Samuel5 WHITNEY is an error for #455, and his stated birth date is actually a death date.

p. 53, #137: James4 WHITNEY was baptized 28 Jan 1699/1700, Watertown, according to Bond's Watertown, volume 1, page 645. It was his brother Jonas4 WHITNEY who was baptized 1 Jun 1708, Watertown. His birth may be the one recorded on 20 Nov 1697, Watertown, according to Watertown vital records, volume 2, page 10, or that record may apply to an older brother who died in infancy.

p. 53, #463: Allen5 WHITNEY died 28 Apr 1736, Watertown, MA, according to Watertown vital records, volume 2, page 109.

p. 53, #464: Eunice5 WHITNEY died 29 Apr 1736, Watertown, MA, according to Watertown vital records, volume 2, page 109.

p. 53, #465: Eunice5 WHITNEY died 24 Nov 1740, Waltham, MA, according to Waltham vital records.

p. 53, #466: Allen5 WHITNEY died 7 Dec 1740, Waltham, MA, according to Waltham vital records.

p. 53, #460: James5 WHITNEY might possibly be the James WHITNEY who married, 14 Jun 1763, Brookline, MA, Mary THAYER, removed to Winchester, NH, and had eight children recorded there. If so, he probably was not the James WHITNEY whose Revolutionary service is assigned to him by Pierce.

p. 53, #138: Jonas4 WHITNEY was baptized 1 Jun 1708, Watertown, MA. On 14 Jul 1723, he owned the covenant. There were two additional children:

  • Amos5 WHITNEY, born 1 Dec 1751, Roxbury, MA.
  • Sarah5 WHITNEY, born 10 Nov 1754, Roxbury, MA, who married 4 Oct 1773, Newton, MA, Nehemiah WARD. They had five or six children whose births were recorded in duplicate in the vital records of Newton, Athol, and Orange, MA. It was she who died 28 Sep 1824, not #471 below.

p. 53, #468: Isaac5 WHITNEY married, 19 Oct 1738, Roxbury, MA, Abigail POND. They had one daughter recorded in Roxbury.

p. 53, #471: Sarah5 WHITNEY died young, and a second daughter of that name was born to this couple, for which see above.

p. 53, #472: Abner5 WHITNEY married firstly, 21 Mar 1768, Newton, MA, Esther JACKSON, and secondly, about 1788, Stoddard, NH, Elizabeth -----.

p. 53, #473: Desire5 WHITNEY married, 9 Mar 1769, Roxbury, MA, Edward WARD. They had three children recorded in Newton, MA.

p. 53, #140: Isaiah4 WHITNEY and Elizabeth5 WHITNEY published their intentions of marriage 15 Nov 1728, Stow, MA, according to Stow vital records. She was #419 on page 50.
