Charles Raymond "Ray" Whitney (Charles, Ebenezer, Micah, Abel, Nathaniel, Benjamin, John), was born 03 28 1878, Phillips, Franklin Co., Maine, and died 10 21 1942, Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

He married 09 29 1929, Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts, Mary Elsie Durdan, daughter of John E. and Elizabeth (Costain) Durdan. She was born 01 28 1884, Halburton, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and died 10 28 1959, Beverly, Essex Co., Masscahusetts.

Ray Whitney was only 10 years old when his father became ill. At this time, he went to live with the Brackley family. Here he did chores around the farm and continued in school. The Brackley's son Carroll became his life-long friend. When his father died in 1894, the family moved to Franklin, MA. Here he worked for Dr. Gallison, driving and caring for the doctor's rig. He learned quite a bit about medicine from the doctor. He came to Beverly and the United Shoe Co. shortly after United opened in 1906. He married Mary Elsie Durdan, and worked as a machinist many years at United Shoe and at several other local companies. He was very active in the Methodist Church, being superintendent of the Sunday School for a long time. He always had a big garden and raised poultry. He loved the outdoors - fishing whenever an opportunity offered. He died in October, 1942 after a long illness. He is buried in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, West Peabody, MA on the east side of Suntaaug Lake. The park is a part of what was the estate of John B. Pierce, his cousin. Elsie is buried beside him.
