James Whitney (John), son of John and Lydia (Russell) Whitney, was born 1 Sep 1813, Union, ME, and died 12 May 1884, Warren, ME.
He married, 5 or 22 Feb 1852, Rockport, ME, Belinda S. (Orff) Day, daughter of George and Sarah (Simmons) Orff. She was born 28 Apr 1825, Camden, ME, and died 23 Aug 1880, East Warren, ME, aged 55 years 3 months 25 days (published in Rockland paper 26 Aug 1880). She had married firstly, 24 Nov 1849, Blackstone, MA, Nathan Day,[1] who died 1 Jul, Blackstone, MA, aged 27 years 8 months 8 days, of consumption,[2] by whom she had a son, Nathan S. Day, b. 7 Sep 1850, Blackstone, MA.[3]
They resided northeastern Warren, ME.
On 15 Aug 1883, Warren, ME, James signed his house over to Lavinia Whitney and Nathan Day. He made his mark.

i. Lavina E. Whitney, b. 20 Mar 1855, Warren, ME; d. 8 Jan 1911, Warren, ME, aged 56 years 9 months 19 days, of paralysis. Child, paternity unknown (but possibly by Charles Simmons): i. Charles H. Whitney, b. 4 Jun 1881, Warren, ME; d. 2 Jan 1953, Rockland, ME; unmarried.
