James⁸ Whitney (Newell⁷, James⁶, Ezra⁵, James⁴, John³, Jonathan², John¹), son of Newell⁷ and Clarissa (Clark) Whitney, was born 20 Jan 1832, VT, and died 23 Feb 1893, Craftsbury, VT.

He married firstly, before 1855, Celestia Ursula Sturtevant, daughter of Sewell Hamilton and Orlana (Batchelder) Sturtevant. She was born 26 Aug 1834, Plainfield, VT, and died 16 Sep 1879, aged 45 years 23 days, Craftsbury, VT.

He married secondly, before 1880, Josephine Godwin. She was born about 1849, ME, and died after 1880.
