Israel C. Whitney, parentage unknown, was born about 1816, said in Chichester, NH, and died 4 Nov 1862, New Orleans, LA, in the Union Army. He was buried first in Monument Cemetery, New Orleans, LA, gravesite 7-48,[1] then disinterred and reburied in Chalmette National Cemetery, LA, Section 53, Grave 4193, a soldier from MA.[2]
He married firstly, 26 Aug 1838, Epsom, NH, Lydia I. Marden,[3] daughter of William and Mary (Norris) Marden. She was born about 1805, NH, and died 5 Sep 1855, Loudon, NH. She was buried in Marden Cemetery, Epsom, NH.
He married secondly, 26 Jun 1856, Canterbury, NH, Caroline B. Hoag, of Chichester, NH,[4] daughter of James M and Lucy (Andrews) Hoag. She was born 19 Jun 1817, Pittsfield, NH, and died 27 Apr 1902, Pittsfield, NH. She married secondly, 2 Nov 1863, Pittsfield, NH, Luther H. Smith.
He married secondly, Sarah Ann Sewell, daughter of Samuel. She was born ..., and died ....
He served in the 6th Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery, in the Civil War. Born Chichester; aged 43; res. Canterbury; enl. July 30, '62, for 3 yrs., as Priv. Died 4 Nov '62, New Orleans, LA.[5]
Sarah A. Whitney applied for a widow's pension for Israel C. Whitney's service in the 6th Independent Battery, Massachusetts Light Artillery. Application No. 128,614, Certificate No. 86,289.

It may be that these are two people: Israel I who m.(1) Lydia and (2) Caroline; and Israel II who m. Sarah. There are arguments for and against this hypothesis. Which one was a civil war soldier?
