John Balch Whitney (Hiram, Adolphus, Benjamin), son of Hiram and Achsah Philena (Balch) Whitney, was born 6 Jul 1844, Hartland, VT, and died 3 Feb 1908, San Francisco, CA, aged 63 years 6 months 28 days, of fatty degeneration of heart.^[1]

He married firstly, 1 Jan 1864, Granville, NY, Amanda Cordelia Balch, daughter of John and Julia Ann (Pond) Balch. She was born 15 Aug 1844, Hartland, VT, and died 14 May 1871, aged 26 years 9 months. She was buried Center Cemetery, Hartland, VT.^[2]

He married secondly, before 1877, Martha A. -----. She was born about 1853, VT, and died after 1880.
