Your Lineage

I think I found your grandfather Dewayne C. Whitney on the 1930 census. He was born about 1915 in Wisconsin. His parents were "Floyd F." Whitney, born about 1888 in Illinois, a farmer, and his wife Victoria C., born about 1890 in Wisconsin. The children in the family were Elmer W., Dewayne C., Lucile I., Gertrude L., Arland G., John W., and Loraine C., all born in Wisconsin. They were living in Arland Township, Barron County, Wisconsin.

Is this the right family?

John Henry Whitney

Floyd's father was John Henry Whitney, according to the 1900 census, born Sep 1849 in Nebraska. His wife was Cecelia, b. April 1853 in Wisconsin. John Henry was listed as a Painter.

Thanks Tim! I had gotten as far a Floyd.. but no farther. Also I knew almost nothing about my great grandmothers side. I did stumble onto a Civil War registry with all those that served and died. I was suprised at how many Whitneys were in there.. but more suprised at the abnomaly high survival rate of Whitney soldiers.. lol

I just found a John Henry Whitney listed as a musician in the civil war. Wonder about the connection.

Man you are fast. This has been a really fun day! I am going to try to chart this all out and give it to my Grandfather on his 93rd birthday.

Even when I know who I am looking for.. I still cant find what you found.. LOL

This is really frustrating.. I started with the info you gave me and my Great Grandmothers side just kept unrolling like a carpet.. I am back into the 1300's in France now. But the Whitney Male side that I really wanted to track stops cold in Nebraska in the 1800's. Why couldn't the line I was really looking for roll out like that? lol I still have not found a connection with a single other Whitney on here.. or any of the other sites I have looked at. I feel so "Unaffiliated".. LOL

I just found this note in the pierce project.

See the "s.p." at the end of his listing? That's Latin for "Sine prole", meaning he died without having any children. Unfortunately, that can't be your John Henry. We'll find him eventually though!

Thanks for the tip. ... it is very tough being a newbie at this.. I know I will get it all figured out.. but right now each page I pull up is a shotgun blast of abbreviations that I don't completely understand.. I just have a hunch when I get past this little block things may fall into place a bit. So many of you have done so much work on this stuff.. I am certain I will cross paths with a documented tree on that side eventually. Then I will have to go back and clean up all these research notes.. lol This site is brilliantly made.. I love it.. great job! Being able to add and remove things so easily is great.. Like a big scratch pad.. except it doesn't get lost under the junk mail.

wow.. this could be. I found a John Henry listing in Iowa earlier today too. Maybe I have been stuck.. because I was too focused on Wisconsin. I need to find that listing I found earlier again. I hope I can find another source to back this up because it means we are off to the races on the line now... Thanks a ton Robert. Adeline really does narrow it down though.. hmmm

found the source I had.. and some others.. not much info on him.. just names and dates for the 2 brothers in Iowa. How does one determine to run with stuff like this? I think some sources mix up the birthdays for James and John.

I suspect I am going to have to do the DNA thing to be sure. I charted out from there on tribalpages and it all seems to work. Gramps says it goes along with what he can remember hearing over the years. Short of spending a summer going back to actual places for verification.. I guess DNA would be the next logical step.

Parentage of Thomas Whitney

I noticed in your website that you have the parents of the immigrant John Whitney's father Thomas Whitney listed as Robert Whitney and Elizabeth Guillims. This was long ago proven to be incorrect. We have worked hard to update all of the online databases which continue to list this incorrect information, but it keeps popping up.

The purported paternal grandparents of Thomas Whitney were originally put into doubt on chronological grounds in the article by Donald Lines Jacobus, "Pre-American Ancestries: John Whitney of Watertown, Mass.," The American Genealogist, vol. 10 (1933-1934), pp. 84-88; and were conclusively ruled out in the article by Paul C. Reed, "Whitney Origins Revisited: John1 Whitney of Watertown, Massachusetts, and Henry1 Whitney of Long Island and Norwalk, Connecticut," The American Genealogist, vol. 69 (1994), pp. 9-14.

just kidding.. he is awesome on the bass.. but really bad on computer. We have always wondered about the connection.. I started charting my stuff a bit and he told me that nobody has been able to do anything on his line even with "professional" help. You guys already did way better than anyone else so far.
