A few of these trains were bound for Oakland, but mostly for San Francisco. The passengers debarked and went by water over the bay to San Francisco. The overland trains had been in service only one year before this list was made. originally the passengers debanked at the Oakland wharf, until Nov 5, 1871, then they ended their journey at Oakland or Vallejo, Ca. After this time they "arrived San Francisco." These were first class passengers. Those on the Omaha trains remained for the trip to Ca. If there was a note that they were found departing Ogden, Utah a couple of days later, they were on Omaha trains. If not on the Ogden train, they debarked between Omaha and Ogden or in Ogden.

WHITNEYS OF IOWA
William Henry Whitney, architect and builder of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, was born in Ross County, Ohio 7 Feb. 1840. He was the son of William and Mary (Ressel) Whitney. William Sr. was a native of Conn. Mary Ressel was born in Ohio. They were married in Ross County, Ohio where their families had moved and pioneered the area. William Sr. was a blacksmith, and worked at this trade for many years.
In 1845 he moved his family to Putnam County, Indiana, and then to Montgomery and later to Tippecanoe County, in Indiana. Here he bought a farm and combined the two trades. In 1854 William Sr. moved his family to Henry County, Iowa, and found a pleasant area in which to live, called by that name, Mount Pleasant.
Later he sold his farm and bought a farm in Marion Twp. However, he sold this land and removed to Nebraska in 1888.
To William and Mary Whitney were born six children. Mary Whitney died in 1859, and in 1861 William Whitney married Ann Eliza Miller, by whom he had two more children. The family moved to Iowa when William Henry Whitney was fourteen years old. In 1860 he married Angelina Miller, the daughter of Arthur Miller. They had two children, Mary F. and William A. Whitney.
Angeline Miller Whitney died shortly after the birth of her second child, and on 6 Dec. 1867 William Whitney married Nancy A. Lamb, daughter of Jacob and Sidney (Farrell) Lamb, who was born 10 March, 1848 in Fulton County, Illinois. Four sons came from this marriage: Charles H. born 25 Sept. 1868; John L. born 12 Jan. 1870; George W. born 17 July 1871; Edwin born 2 March 1873.
Mr. Whitney was a builder and contractor, and many residences in Henry County, Iowa bear his unique and personal stamp of quality and workmanship of the highest standard. In 1887 he erected a handsome church building for the Methodist Episcopal Society of New London. Perhaps he was best known for the re building of the Catholic Church of Mount Pleasant, destroyed by a cyclone or tornado in July 1882, which he repaired and re assembled quickly for that congregation.
