John C. Fremont9 'Free' Whitney (Melvin8, Erastus7, Ezra6, Ezra5, John4, Isaiah3, Thomas2, John1, ThomasA), son of Melvin8 and Ann Eliza (Hooker) Whitney, was born 21 Jan 1849 in New York, probably in Canaseraga, Allegany Co, NY, and died sometime after 1900. Like his father and his brother Hugh, he was a miller.

He married Margaret (Smith), about 1883. She was born Jul 1859 in Iowa, the daughter of Scottish immigrants.

He has not been located definitively in 1880, though he may possibly be the 'J. F. Whitney', a lumberman in Ellsworth, Kansas, though this man is listed as having been born in Michigan. In 1900, the family was living in Topeka, Kansas where Fremont was working as a miller. He has not been located after this, though his son Bayard appears again in 1920.

Children of John C. Fremont9 and Margaret (Smith) Whitney:

i. Bayard Taylor Whitney was born 4 Nov 1884 in Kansas and died 18 Jun 1952 in Los Angeles, California.
ii. Julia E. Whitney was born May 1888 in Kansas.
iii. Ruth A. Whitney was born Dec 1891 in Kansas.
