Joseph was living with his family in Brown County, Illinois 1850 and Menard County, Illinois 1860. Can't find him in 1870, but in 1880 he in Maine Prairie, Stearns, Minnesota with his wife Anna and their 3 yr old daughter, Eva. 1890 Veterans Schedule he is in Maine Prairie, Stearns, Minnesota and it says he was a private in F1 Illinois Cav. for 6mo, E33 (pension file index card says E 133)Inf. for 4mo, and B11 Cav. for 6mo. In 1900 he and his family are still in Maine Prairie and his children include Benjamin F b. Feb 1881, Estel E b. Jul 1884, Ray. N b. Mar 1891, Jessie M b. May 1895, and Myrna b. Sept. 1899 ... Also in the household is daughter Ava A Borning b. Oct 1878 and her husband Albert Borning b. Apr 1873. By 1910 Joseph's wife Anna has died and he is living in her sister, Celestia Cossairt's household as a boarder. Joseph's death certificate has his father as John F Whitney b. New York state and mother as Sarrah Noakes b. Illinois. He died at St. Raphael's Hospital in St. Cloud, Stearns, Minnesota Dec. 2, 1917 from General Intoxication from chronic cystitis. Birth date on the death certificate says March 31, 1844 Illinois he was a retired farmer. He is buried in Maine Prairie.

Obituary from the St. Cloud Daily Times May 27, 1907 p. 3-- THE DEATH OF MRS. ANN WHITNEY Of Kimball Followed Stroke of Apoplexy; Was Old Resident Of County Mr. and Mrs. S.G. Stickney returned from Kimball where they went to attend the funeral of the late Mrs. Ann Whitney, a sister of Mrs. Stickney, who died Friday evening following a stroke of apoplexy. The deceased was the wife of J.B. Whitney and she lived at Kimball since 1858. She was 60 years of age and was born at Bangor, Me. She moved to this country with her parents when but a young girl and has ever since made her home at Kimball. The deceased is survived by her husband and six children. The children are: Mrs. Ava Bouring (note: Borning in other records), and Benjamin, Estel, Ray, Jessie and Murno Whitney. She was a member of the Old Settlers' Association and had been an attendant at its annual gatherings for many years.

St. Cloud Daily Times Mon., Dec 3, 1917 p. 5 WELL KNOWN KIMBALL MAN DIED YESTERDAY The death of Jos. B. Whitney occurred yesterday afternoon at St. Raphael's hospital. Mr. Whitney was born in New York State in 1844 and later moved to Kimball, Minn. He is survived by one son, Ray, who resides at Crystal, North Dakota. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. (note: he did have other children living at this time)
Daily Journal Press Mon., Dec 3, 1917 p. 4 JOS. B. WHITNEY DIED AT HOSPITAL SUNDAY OLD RESIDENT OF KIMBALL DEAD AFTER SHORT ILLNESS- REMAINS TO KIMBALL. Jos. B. Whitney, age 73 years, died Sunday afternoon at 4:30 at St. Raphael's hospital following a short illness. Complications due to advanced age was the cause of death. Mr. Whitney resided at Kimball for many years and was well known in that section. He is a brother of Mrs. S.G. Stickney (note: should be brother-in-law) formerly of this city. A son, Ray N. Whitney, resides at Christle, N.D. The remains will be shipped to Kimball, but no definite arrangements have been made as to the day of the funeral.
