WHITNEY WHISTLER, Volume 1, Number 2 Henry Whitney, born in England about January 1620, came to America in 1649, and settled on Long Island. As far as we know there has been no claim to a relationship between the descendants of Henry Whitney, and the descendants of John Whitney of Watertown, Mass. There is a claim to royalty by the Henry Whitney group, but since we have never investigated, we do not want to print anything we do not substantiate. There are several books that deal with the royal line of American families, and it does include the Stephen Whitney line. William Salmon took possession of Hashamomack, or Southold, Long Island, by marrying the widow Sinderland, whose husband purchased the land from the Indian Chief, Paukhamp in 1645. On the 8th of October, 1649, he sold three-fourths of the land to Henry Whitney, Edward Tredwell and Thomas Benedict. John Whitney, son of Henry, was born before the family got to Southold. He was of age in 1665-1666. John settled in Norwalk, Conn.,where he married, March 17, 1674, Elizabeth Smith, the daughter of Richard. He built a fulling mill there. John died in Norwalk in 1720. Other lines of this family we have not traced. Many of this family remained in Ridgefield, Conn., but there seems to be much evidence that a inordinate number of the descendants of Henry Whitney went to New York state. Samuel Whitney, Jr. eldest son of the above Samuel of Shrewsbury, Mass., in the company of his brother Nathaniel went to Marlborough, Vermont, Nov. 1769. In March 1770, he made a quantity of maple sugar, then removed from east to the west side of town, and started anew on the premises of Ira Adams (who succeeded him there). In 1770, he opened the forest and put up his log house. In raising this house, he invited his brothers, Nathaniel and Jonas, and James Ball, to assist him. They worked all day, and returned home in the evening, and almost lost their way as the forest was so dense. In 1772, Samuel moved his family, consisting of his wife and his four children, to Marlborough. He was bold and fearless, and a true pioneer. He built many houses, and kept a public house until he died. Samuel Whitney was a great hunter. His sons, Moses and Guilford, once saw him in the grip of a fierce bear, and sent the dogs to help him, thus saving his life, but he limped until he died, the injury to his leg was so severe. Most of the above we have taken from the "Whitney Family of Conn.," by S. Whitney Phoenix. We must warn you that, like the Pierce book about John Whitney family, there are many errors in this edition. Some of the family relegated to the John Whitney family belongs in the Henry Whitney family, and the same claim may be made against the Henry Whitney book. We will give you an example of this: Mary, or Maria Whitney Sherman, is included in the Corn. Whitney Genealogy. She was born in Dummerston, Vermont, Oct. 15, 1810, and married at Ashford, New York, Charles Sherman, who was born at New Bedford, Mass., the son of Ebenezer and Content Tabor Sherman. She does not belong in the Henry Whitney genealogy as she is from the John Whitney family. She was the dau. of Henry Whitney born Jan 19, 1779, Concord Mass., and Fanny Miller, born Dummerston, Vt., dau. of William and Hannah Worden Miller. Henry is not listed in the Watertown records, but is of the old Watertown records. See # 9627, Vol. 2, of Phoenix Genealogy of Henry Whitney. This indicates that Mary Whitney Sherman, of Ashford, N.Y. had a son, Rev. Charles Wesley Sherman, a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, married in Springville, New York, Laura Lucelia Runyon, of Jerusalem, New York, daughter of Benjamin and Drusilla Whitney Runyan. See entry # 12396. The corrected version of Mary's ancestry is in the Vermont Historical Gazetteer, Vol. 5, part 2, p. 134. Actually this serves as an introduction to a Vermont family of Whitneys. Benjamin, born April 12, 1723, son of Daniel, third generation, and Dorothy Tainter. He married Deliverance ________. Their children were: Henry. born Jan. 8, 1745-6. Sarah, born Sept. 1, 1749, also called Sally, married William Kelley, April 1802, and then married William Crosby, Feb. 9, 1810. Benjamin, Jr., born Feb. 2, 1751-2. Deliverance, born Nov. 20, 1757. Esther, date of birth not known, married Washington Burnham, April 22, 1799, who was drowned. She then married ___________, and moved from the town of Dummerston, Vt. She had children; Polly, ?. Polly. Bond s Watertown does not mention all the children of Benjamin and Deliverance, but the Vermont Historical Gazetter, vol 5, part 2, p. 162, says that Benjamin Whitney was in the town of Dummerston before 1781. It mentions his daughter Esther married Washington Burnham, and that he drowned, and his widow married again and moved away. And that she had 2 sisters, Sally and Polly. Also the 1800 census of Vt. lists Benjamin as having 2 white males and 5 females, including heads of families. Benjamin Whitney s war records is in the Vermont War Records. He signed a petition in Dummerston, May 29, 1781. He bought Nov 1, 1781, lot no. 10, from Daniel Taylor in Dummerston, and 100 acres Oct 5, 1786, from John Penhallow of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Another son of Daniel and Dorothy Tainter Whitney, was Henry, born Dec. 1, 1738, and died 1781. He married Hannah Tombs of Newton, Mass, Jan 5, 1769 (See vital records of Newton, Mass). Children of these were: Benjamin, born March 10, 1769, or 1770. Lydia. died Dec. 28, 1776, age 3. Anna, died Dec. 27, 1776, age 3. Hannah, died Dec. 24, 1776, age 17 months. Henry, born Jan 19, 1779, at Concord, Mass. He was a nephew of the above Benjamin of Dummerston, Vt. Henry moved to Vt. and married there, Fanny Miller. We have discussed Henry at the top of the page. He married 1800, and they moved to Aurora, New York, where he died Aug. 9, 1853. Hannah died at North Adams, Mass., Sept. 29, 1861. From this family came William Whitney, born Jan. 14, 1804, Dummerston, Vt. who married Lucy Caswell Briggs of Strongsville, Ohio, Oct. 1, 1829. She was born in Vermont, July 28, 1810, and died May 25, 1885. William Whitney died August 28, 1870 in Rockford, Iowa, and is buried in Charles City. Lucy married, after his death, a Baptist minister in Rockford, Ill. (Now we have debated those 2 Rockfords in separate states, and do not know if it is an error in the genealogy). Children of William and Lucy: Washington, born June 27, 1831, and died ?. Harriet Maria, born March 5, 1834, and died Sept. 25, 1865. She married, Feb. 1, 1853, George Miller Pinney, born Rockdale, Pa. Infant daughter, born August 12, 1836, died that day. Willington, born Sept. 19, 1840, died Feb. 9, 1842. Washington Whitney. Many of the Whitneys remained loyal to the King in the American Revolution. Their favorite place to migrate was the maritime provinces of Canada. It is wise to look for these ancestors in "Sabine s American Loyalists." It will not help to question their loyalty to the Crown. The sense these people had of their feeling for England was conditioned through hundreds of years of being an "Englishman." It would seem to us that it might have been a habit, being a follower of the King. But since we have only the writings of the people from those times we cannot be sure. Any argument over the merits either way, creates an impasse. We have found a few of these Whitneys, and will try to find more. Huldah Whitney, born in Stamford, Corn, Marbh 8, 1762, went with her brother in 1783, to St. John, New Brunswick, where she married, Oct. 23, 1790, Josiah Butler, who was born Nov. 8, 1761.
